She was silently seated at her favorite coffee shop across the street, sipping in the last drop of her expresso.
This was the only time she could really get away from everything including her grouchy boss, Cain Powers.
For two years, she'd worked for him in Power corp as his personal secretary, managing every call, any document that needed signing, his coffee, his flower orders to every woman he'd date, heck she even handled all the birthday cards that needed to be sent.
She sat there as she remembered the good old days when Cain's old man was still around. He always motivated her and saw the potential in her, he had been like the father she wished to have.
A week earlier before his demise, Emma had visited him in the Powers' mansion and it was there that Xavier asked for a simple request from her, "to stand by his son no matter what". Without any hesitation, she agreed for she owed , Xavier Powers everything she had accomplished in her life.
When the news of his departure hit the morning news, she was inconsolably sad and together with her family they grieved for him. She had to keep her end of the bargain and keep an eye on his son, Cain Powers , later did she know that he was nothing like his dad but the exact opposite!
Stemming those thoughts out of her mind, she raised her head and looked at the woman coming towards her. She walked with a dignified graceful gait, her chin up and her mouth slightly open, as she smiled at her. The woman was Jada Richards, the owner of the coffee shop , they had become friends instantly since she began working across the street.
"Another expresso for my favorite customer," she said as she patted Emma's shoulder.
" Thanks,Jada.I need to get to work before he notices I'm not there," she said as she looked at her pink wrist watch her brother had bought her as a birthday gift.
"Em, it's your break, and you of all people deserve it. I'm sure he can surely wait for twenty minutes", she looked at her worryingly. Jada had grown to love Emma Millers like her daughter ever since she saw how much Emma loved her coffee. She grew in awe of her.
"You know how he can be, Jada, so don't insist," as soon as she had finished those words , her phone started buzzing beside her.
'Grumpy CEO'
She picked up her phone as Jada sat there staring at her lovingly as she talked with her boss on the phone.
"Millers !Where the heck are you?"
"Sir,I'm on my break but I'm coming back right now."
"You better be here in ten minutes,I need the Yakama files on my desk,ASAP!"
That was pretty much the conversation she'd have with her boss.
"Jada, thanks for the coffee but I gotta go,see you later." She said as she left some bucks on her table.
Haaa! Powers' company was always busy with staff moving up and down trying to evade Cain's thunder. He never tolerated failure in his life, one wrong move and you were done! She still wondered how she was able to stay in one piece at times , especially when he had woken on the wrong side of the bed.
Cain was pacing around his office , muttering to himself , his movements angrily sharp. Mr Yakama Nakamoru had called to inform him that he'd backed out from his project since someone had tipped him off that he was not to be trusted.
He had looked for the files on his desk and also on Millers' desk but no sign of them.
After a few minutes or so Emma entered his office as she went to reach for the large metal filing cabinet behind him.
"Here they are sir," as she handed the files.
"Took you long enough!Next time instead of dilly-dallying elsewhere, remember your job!" he growled at her, as he sat behind his large oval desk.
She had already gotten used to his stuck-up attitude. Only once was he nice to her,and that's when his mother Mrs Victoria Powers visited him unexpectedly.
"Suck it up,Emma! You need the money,do it for Mr Xavier", she calmed herself as she sat at her own little space outside his office , her desk.
Her long dress was making her feel itchy and this was per her boss' orders , to always put on conservative clothing so as not to seduce the board members.
After working for hours, analyzing some data on last year's report , she was done , away from her boss to the family that always kept pushing her to strive for the stars.
Taking her vintage bag , she left as Elvis the security guard bid her goodbye. Standing outside she waited for a cab as the wind howled against her.Her boss , Cain Powers , passed by her as he asked for the keys to his Bugatti parked across the road.
Didn't his mum teach manners? She wondered , as his boss didn't mind to care whether she froze to death or not.
Entering his car , he rolled down the heavily tinted window and asked her,"What are you waiting for,Millers get in"
Was he talking to her, there was no one there so he must have been talking to her...
