Dax's POV The stone wolves' eyes are the color of nothing, pale and depthless, and they're moving before Thessaly can even finish backing away from the archway. "Do not run," she says sharply, already retreating toward the outer chamber with Ren pulling her back further still. "Whatever happens, do not run from them. Running is the only wrong answer this place accepts." I don't have time to ask what the right answer is. The guardians come off their pedestals like something that's been waiting three generations for exactly this moment, stone shifting and grinding into motion that shouldn't be possible for carved rock. Dust sifts down from the archway above us, disturbed for the first time in longer than either of us has been alive. They don't come to us together. They come in the space
