Chapter 5: Hidden Identity, New Beginnings

1135 Words
Mason walked away from the newspaper building with a feeling he couldn’t describe. His heart was pounding, but it wasn’t just from nerves. It was from fear. Fear of being discovered. Fear of being rejected. Fear of being forced back into the life he had escaped. He had done his best to hide his identity. He had changed his name. He had avoided giving details. He had left out the truth because he didn’t want anyone to know who he was. He didn’t want anyone to recognize him. He didn’t want anyone to see the broken man behind the mask. He didn’t want his past to follow him. But he didn’t realize that hiding the truth would almost cost him the job. A few days later, Mason received a call from the newspaper company. “Mr. Mason, this is the HR department,” the voice on the phone said. “We reviewed your application, and we would like to schedule an interview.” Mason’s heart skipped a beat. “Thank you,” he replied quietly. “When is the interview?” “Tomorrow at 10 a.m.,” the HR representative said. “Please bring all necessary documents, including your ID and proof of address.” Mason’s stomach tightened. Documents. ID. Proof of address. He had avoided giving his real information. He didn’t want his past to be exposed. He didn’t want anyone to know his real name. He didn’t want anyone to connect him to his old life. He had planned to figure it out later, once he was inside. But now, he had no choice. He had to decide whether to reveal the truth or lose the chance at the new life he wanted. That night, Mason sat on his bed, staring at the documents he had gathered. They were fake. He had purchased them from a small shop that made counterfeit papers for people who wanted to disappear. He knew it was risky. He knew it was wrong. But he also knew he didn’t have any other choice. He couldn’t go back to his old life. He couldn’t return to the pain. He couldn’t let his identity follow him. So he decided to take the risk. The next morning, Mason arrived at the newspaper company early. He wore a plain shirt and a calm expression, but his heart was racing inside his chest. He entered the HR office and sat down across from the manager. The manager looked at him carefully. “Your application looks good,” she said. “But we need to verify your documents.” Mason nodded. “Of course.” The manager began checking the papers. She looked at his ID, then at his proof of address. Her eyes narrowed slightly. “This address doesn’t match our records.” Mason felt his stomach drop. He tried to stay calm. “Maybe it’s because I just moved here. I haven’t updated everything yet.” The manager continued looking at the documents. “Your ID looks suspicious. We need to verify your identity.” Mason swallowed hard. His mind raced. He had never felt so scared in his life. He had to think fast. He could feel his dream slipping away. He could feel his new life disappearing. He could feel himself being pushed back into the darkness. But then, he remembered why he was doing this. He remembered the pain. He remembered the crash. He remembered the woman who had left him. He remembered his need to escape. He took a deep breath and spoke carefully. “I understand your concerns,” he said softly. “But I assure you, I’m a real person. I just want a simple life. I don’t want attention. I don’t want fame. I just want to work.” The manager looked at him for a long moment, studying his face. Mason could feel the tension in the room. He could feel the fear in his own body. The manager finally leaned back in her chair. “We can’t hire someone without proper verification.” Mason nodded. “I know.” The manager sighed. “I’m sorry, but we have to reject your application.” Mason felt his heart shatter. He had come so far. He had fought so hard. He had risked everything. And now it was over. He stood up slowly, his hands shaking. “I understand,” he said quietly. He turned to leave. But before he could reach the door, another voice spoke. “Wait.” Mason stopped. He turned around and saw a woman standing in the doorway. She was tall and confident, with an expression that made Mason feel like she could see right through him. It was Evelyn. His heart skipped a beat. He hadn’t expected to see her. He hadn’t expected to feel his heart race again. Evelyn walked toward the manager and spoke softly. “What’s going on?” The manager explained the situation. “He didn’t provide valid documents.” Evelyn looked at Mason carefully. Her eyes narrowed, but she didn’t say anything yet. She turned to the manager. “We can’t hire someone without proper verification.” Evelyn nodded, but then she looked back at Mason. Her expression softened slightly, as if she could sense the pain behind his eyes. She spoke slowly. “What’s your name?” Mason hesitated. He didn’t want to say it. But he also didn’t want to lose this chance. He looked at her and said, “My name is Mason.” Evelyn’s eyes widened slightly, but she didn’t show surprise. She simply nodded. “And why did you hide your identity?” Mason swallowed. “I’m trying to start over. I don’t want anyone to know who I was.” Evelyn studied him for a moment. Then she looked at the manager. “Give him a chance,” she said. The manager frowned. “But his documents…” Evelyn raised her hand. “I will handle it. We can verify his identity later. For now, he needs a job.” The manager looked uncertain. “This isn’t normal.” Evelyn’s voice became firmer. “I know. But sometimes people need a second chance.” Mason couldn’t believe what he was hearing. He stared at Evelyn, unable to speak. Evelyn turned back to him. “You can start tomorrow. As an office assistant.” Mason’s eyes filled with tears. He felt like his heart was finally healing. He nodded. “Thank you.” Evelyn gave him a small nod and turned to leave. As she walked away, Mason felt a mix of emotions—relief, gratitude, fear, and hope. He had almost lost his chance. But now, he had a new beginning. He had a job. He had a new life. And he had a chance to rebuild himself.
