Chapter 11: The Line Between Distance Two days passed. Then three. Adrian still didn’t come. Elena told herself she should stop noticing the pattern. People didn’t always stay consistent. Life didn’t revolve around one presence in a gallery. But the gallery felt like it did. Every morning, she walked in expecting silence. Every evening, she left carrying a question she couldn’t answer. And slowly, something worse than curiosity began to grow. Uncertainty. Not about where he was. But about whether he had ever really been there the way she thought. On the fourth day, Elena finally did something she hadn’t done before. She went to the curator. The office was small, tucked behind the main hall. Papers, catalogues, and half-finished exhibition notes were scattered across the desk. He looked up when she entered. “Elena,” he said, slightly surprised. “Everything okay?” She hesitated. That wasn’t a question she had an answer for. “I wanted to ask about him,” she said. The curator’s expression changed subtly. “Adrian?” She nodded. A pause followed—long enough to feel intentional. “He’s not a regular visitor in the official sense,” the curator said carefully. “He came here a while ago… not as a guest, more like someone who needed a place to sit without being seen.” Elena listened closely. “That doesn’t explain why he stopped coming,” she said. The curator leaned back slightly. “People don’t always announce their endings,” he replied. That word—endings—sat heavily in the room. Elena shook her head slightly. “But he didn’t feel like an ending.” The curator studied her for a moment. “You’re very sure about someone you know very little about,” he said gently. That hit something she wasn’t prepared for. Because it was true. She didn’t know him. Not really. Just colors. Silence. A painting. A few words. And yet… She still felt the absence like something personal. Elena looked down for a moment, then spoke quietly. “Did he say anything about the blue painting?” The curator’s eyes flickered. “He said it wasn’t finished,” he replied. “And that unfinished things have a way of staying inside you.” Elena’s chest tightened slightly. That sounded too familiar. Too close to what she had been feeling. She left the office soon after, without asking more questions. Outside, the air felt colder than usual. The gallery doors closed behind her with a soft click that sounded louder than it should have. Elena stood still for a moment. Then she turned back toward the glass walls. Inside, the painting was still visible. Deep blue. Still holding its silence. But now, for the first time, Elena wondered something she had avoided thinking before. What if Adrian wasn’t just someone who visited the painting… What if he was someone who belonged to it? That thought stayed with her longer than she expected. That night, she couldn’t sleep. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw blue. Not calm. Not soft. Heavy. And somewhere inside it… a faint line of gold she couldn’t reach anymore. Elena turned on her side, whispering into the darkness. “Where did you go… really?” But the silence didn’t answer. It only remembered.
