The Dark Beneath

Chapter Five The air was thick with tension, the ground beneath their feet trembling as the howl echoed through the trees, loud and raw. Kaela and Liana stood frozen, the full weight of the moment settling over them. The dark figure in front of them—Bastian—had stepped back, his cloak swirling around him as if the shadows themselves were alive. For the first time since they had arrived in the forest, Kaela could feel something more than fear coursing through her veins. It was power—untamed and wild, like the storm that was fast approaching. A low growl reverberated from behind them, and both Kaela and Liana instinctively turned toward it. From the edges of the trees, figures began to emerge—tall, shadowy, their glowing eyes cutting through the dark like twin embers. They moved with purpose, their strides silent, unnatural, as if they were creatures of the night itself. The Hollow Watchers. Bastian had been right. They were here. And they weren’t here to watch. They were here to take. Liana’s breath caught in her throat. “Kaela,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “What do we do?” Kaela’s pulse raced. She felt the weight of Liana’s hand on her arm, the heat of their bond pressing through the silence between them. She had to think. They couldn’t just run. Not from this. Not from something so deeply tied to the curse that had always loomed over them. “The stones,” Kaela said, her voice sharp. “We have to go to the stones. It’s the only way.” Before Liana could respond, one of the Hollow Watchers stepped forward, its eyes glowing brighter, its form shifting as if the darkness itself were consuming it. It was tall—taller than any man Kaela had ever seen. Its skin was like blackened stone, its face a hollow mask of jagged lines and sharp angles. Its gaze locked onto hers, and for a moment, Kaela felt as though it could see straight through her—into her very soul. Bastian stepped forward, raising a hand in a gesture that could have been interpreted as a warning or a plea for peace. “Leave them be,” he said, his voice rough, the words carrying a weight of authority that Kaela hadn’t expected. “This one is different. She holds the key.” The Hollow Watcher’s eyes shifted to Bastian, and Kaela could feel the air grow even colder as if it was tasting the words, testing them. It opened its mouth—a cavernous, impossibly wide gape—and spoke in a voice that sounded like it came from deep within the earth. “The key has not yet unlocked itself,” it intoned, its voice a low rumble that shook the ground. “It has no place among us, not yet. But its time draws near.” A cold, shuddering breath passed through Kaela, the words sinking into her bones, their meaning twisting in her gut. The key? Was that her? Or something more? Something deeper tied to the curse she had never fully understood. “What do you mean?” she demanded, her voice cracking with the weight of her confusion. “What key? What are you—” The Hollow Watcher cut her off with a growl, taking another step forward. The shadows seemed to ripple around it as if the darkness itself were a living thing. Its hands—clawed and long—reached toward her, but before it could close the distance, Kaela felt a surge of power rise within her. It was instinctual, like the pulse of her heartbeat, only stronger, more dangerous. Without thinking, Kaela raised her hand. She could feel the wind rush around her, whipping the air into a frenzy, and before she knew what was happening, the earth beneath her feet began to crack, the ground trembling violently. A low rumble filled the air, and from the cracks emerged tendrils of dark energy, coiling around her like serpents. The Hollow Watchers hissed, recoiling from the power she had just unleashed. Kaela’s eyes widened as she looked down at her hands, feeling the surge of energy coursing through her. It was like nothing she had ever felt before like the very earth itself had decided to answer her call. Liana was speechless, her wide eyes fixed on her twin. “Kaela… how are you doing this?” Kaela could hardly answer. She didn’t know. It was as if the world was shifting around her, opening doors she had never seen, revealing things she hadn’t even known she could access. It felt natural—too natural. But also… dangerous. Was this part of their curse? Or was it something more? The Hollow Watcher in front of her growled, its glowing eyes narrowing with malice. “This is the power that will lead to your destruction,” it sneered its voice a low hiss that sent a shiver down Kaela’s spine. Before Kaela could respond, another howl echoed through the trees. This one was different. It was louder, sharper, and filled with an almost tangible sense of urgency. The ground trembled beneath them once again, and in the distance, Kaela saw the faintest glimmer of movement—more figures, more shadows. “They’re coming,” Bastian said, his voice urgent. “We have to go. Now.” Kaela hesitated, the pull of the Hollow Watchers still heavy in the air, but she knew they couldn’t stay. Not now, not with whatever was coming next. She reached for Liana’s hand, pulling her toward the stone circle. But as they began to move, Kaela felt something cold and sharp press against her chest, a hand that wasn’t hers. She spun around, her heart racing, only to find that the Hollow Watcher had closed the distance between them in an instant. Its cold, jagged fingers wrapped around her wrist, its eyes locking with hers, the depth of its gaze sending a jolt of dread through her entire body. “You will not escape,” it whispered, its voice full of finality. “The Hollow Watchers do not let their prey run.” With a cry of frustration, Kaela summoned all the power within her, throwing herself backward with a burst of energy. The Watcher staggered, its grip loosening for a split second—but that was all Kaela needed. She pulled free, stumbling back toward the stone circle, but the Hollow Watchers were closing in. Liana’s voice was panicked. “Kaela, we have to go now!” But Kaela couldn’t leave yet. Not until she had answers. Not until she knew what all of this meant for them. As the first wave of Hollow Watchers closed in, Kaela turned to Bastian. “You know what this is, don’t you?” she demanded. “What’s happening to us?” Bastian’s eyes glinted darkly, but his face remained unreadable. “It’s not the beginning you should be worried about,” he said softly. “It’s the end.”
