Chapter 3: The Invisible Date

1156 Words
It had been two days since Olivia received the message from Liam, and she found herself scrolling through her phone at least a dozen times a day, debating whether or not to reply. Each time, her thumb hovered over the screen, ready to hit “send,” but something always stopped her. Fear? Uncertainty? The fact that she wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to go down this rabbit hole? But the text had been clear enough. Liam was interested. And for the first time in a long time, someone was really interested in her, not just her invisibility. Maybe I should give him a chance, she thought, biting her lip as she sat on her couch, the late afternoon sun casting a warm glow across her apartment. She had spent most of the day debating whether or not to see him again. When the text message had popped up, it had felt like a spark—something that could light a fire of excitement in her otherwise mundane life. But then there was always the other side. The side of her that wanted to run, to fade back into the background where it was safe. Because what happened if things went wrong? But Olivia had always been good at hiding. Now, for once, she thought maybe it was time to let herself be seen. And if she could use her invisibility to help manage the situation—well, that was a bonus. With a deep breath, she finally typed a response. Olivia: “I guess we can meet up, Liam. But don’t expect me to be some easy catch. I’m not the type to fall for a pretty face so easily.” She hit send and immediately felt a rush of nerves. Would he think she was being too standoffish? Too playful? Maybe she had overdone it. But before she could second-guess herself, his reply came through. Liam: “I wouldn’t expect anything less. How about tomorrow evening? I know a great little café in the city. We can see if I can convince you otherwise.” Olivia smiled at the thought of Liam’s confidence, that easy charm that made him so approachable. She could feel the pull of curiosity and desire, and against her better judgment, she agreed. Olivia: “Okay, fine. Tomorrow. But I’m warning you now—I’m not going to be impressed that easily.” She chuckled as she sent the message, already imagining his face when she showed up. If she had to be seen, she might as well make an entrance. And if things got too weird, well—she always had the option of disappearing. The next evening, Olivia stood in front of her mirror, pulling at the sleeves of the black dress she had chosen for the date. She wasn’t sure if it was the right choice. The dress was a little too tight, a little too sexy, but it also made her feel confident, like she was stepping out of her comfort zone in more ways than one. She glanced at her phone—5:45 p.m. The café Liam had chosen was just a few blocks away, and she had promised to meet him at 6:00. Olivia felt her pulse quicken at the thought. What if this is a disaster? What if he sees me as just another quirky woman in a dress, and it’s not as exciting as I think it will be? But the thought of disappearing mid-date crossed her mind, and she smiled, feeling the pull of her power. She could make him chase her. Make him want her more. The thought gave her an edge of confidence, even if it was a little mischievous. She had control here. With a final glance at her reflection, she grabbed her bag and made her way out the door. Liam had arrived at the café early, nervously checking his watch. He hadn’t been on a date in a while—especially one where he had no idea what to expect. Olivia was different from anyone he had ever met. The way she’d seemed so eager to leave the party that night, yet still managed to leave him thinking about her non-stop, was all-consuming. He ordered a coffee to calm his nerves, but it didn’t help much. The clock on the wall ticked steadily toward 6:00 p.m., and he found himself scanning the door, waiting for Olivia to walk in. Then, just as the minute hand reached the top, she appeared. Olivia stepped inside, her eyes scanning the café before landing on him. Her entrance was quiet, almost understated, but there was an undeniable presence about her. The way she moved—like she was fully aware of how every eye in the room would inevitably be drawn to her. Liam’s breath caught for a moment, and he stood quickly, pushing his chair back with a creak as he smiled at her. “Olivia,” he said, his voice filled with both admiration and curiosity. “I’m glad you could make it.” Olivia didn’t immediately respond. She tilted her head slightly, as if measuring the situation. He was right. He wasn’t what she had expected, but in all the right ways. There was an easy confidence about him, but not the kind that made him come off as arrogant. “I almost didn’t come,” Olivia said with a teasing grin. “But then I thought, why not? You might surprise me.” Liam laughed softly, gesturing for her to sit. “I’m hoping I’ll do more than surprise you.” As they sat down, the conversation started light. They talked about the weather, the city, even the café itself. But Olivia noticed something subtle—a tension between them that neither could deny. She could feel it simmering under the surface, and for a brief moment, she almost wished she could disappear, just to escape the feeling. But something told her she had to let it play out. Liam’s eyes flickered to hers every so often, as if trying to read her thoughts. He knew there was something different about her, but what exactly? She had an air of mystery about her that made it impossible to look away. It was as if her every word and gesture carried a weight that no one else had. And then, for a moment, Olivia’s mind wandered. She could feel the familiar pull of her power—the desire to fade out of sight, to slip away from the pressure of the moment. She wondered what it would be like to disappear just as Liam leaned in for a kiss. To have him chase her, not knowing where she went. But as she looked at him, something made her hesitate. Something about the way he smiled, the way he looked at her, told her that maybe—just maybe—she didn’t need to run away this time.
