Chapter Two
Fate or Coincidence
Sitting home after an exhausting day at work, with all those new projects and stuff, he gets up and opens the fridge to look for something easy, but realizes he's not even hungry, he just has a weird feeling. Looking out the window he feels the need to go watch the stars, thinking maybe up there he can put his thoughts in order.
Getting to the roof there is a fresh breeze, the night is warm and the sky is clear and full of stars, he goes straight to his usual place in the farther corner of the building, and stars admiring the sky.
The door of the roof opens and she comes in, like a vision, she goes through the door and the breeze blows through her long brown curls, wearing a light cream colored dress that flies with the wind like in a movie scene, and her sadness is so evident in those deep green eyes that it's almost tangible. She walks across the roof but doesn't seem to notice he is there.
It's been a while since he last saw her, around 3 years ago she moved in to the 3rd floor, directly under his apartment, he remembers the day they moved in, he walked in the elevator and when the door was about to close he heard 'Hold, please!' in a panting voice, he held the door and she came in carrying a couple of boxes, 'Thank you!' she said looking at him with a smile, such a beautiful smile,'Do you want some help with those?' he asked, 'Oh, no need, thanks! But could you press the 3rd for me, please?' she asked nicely, 'Sure!' he answered pressing the button, 'Thanks!' she replied, it was such a fast ride, only the third floor, as the doors opened he was standing in front of the elevator, 'Honey, didn't I tell you not to pick up too much weight?', he asked rhetorically in a worried tone, 'Don't worry, it's light, it's just big, honey' she answered on her way out, so she looked back at me and said with a smile, 'Thanks again' and made her way to her apartment while he picked up the box on the top of her pile. He remembers thinking she had the best smile.
After that, he used to see her in the elevator, every time she walked in she would say 'morning, 'afternoon, or 'evening, with a casual smile, her eyes were so deep and candid, beautiful green eyes, and she smelled like fresh fruits or something, like strawberries, a sweet smell, her smile was refreshing, even though life is not always rainbows and butterflies, somehow she always had a smile on her face, an honest one, like she wanted to spread some happiness. Sometimes they were together, sometimes it was only her, sometimes only him, he would also greet him every time, but he was always serious when he was alone. He noticed when they were together she always looked so happy, she would put on a big smile, a loving one, those green eyes looking at him with so much love that they sparkled. He always looked like he was crazy about her too, but in a somewhat more composed kind of way, but crazy in love nonetheless.
It was beautiful to watch, he remembers feeling a little envious of that man, it would probably be nice to be in such a passionate loving relationship with someone as her. That sure was a lucky man.
Around 8 months ago, he entered the elevator and she was already there, she greeted him with a sad smile, so sad it was heartbreaking, the door was open because she hadn't pressed any button yet, it looked like her head was anywhere but there, her eyes were swollen and red, as if she cried the entire night, '3rd floor, right?' he asked nicely in an attempt to bring her back to reality, 'Oh, right... yes, thank you.' She looked at him with another shy, sad smile, as he pressed the buttons on the panel. The elevator stopped, and with an empty look and a faint smile she said ' 'Night...' and walked out. After that he noticed he didn't see them together anymore, neither did he see him alone as well, every time he saw her it looked like she had lost more weight, her eyes were empty and didn't have that usual glow, he couldn't hear laughter or music coming up from their apartment anymore, it was all silent, her smile was sad, even though she would try to make it look like it was ok. He started seeing her less and less. Somehow he never mastered enough courage to talk to her, ask if she was ok, ask her name.
And now she is there, a few feet away from him, he wonders if she is also here to admire the sky, as she looks up and closes her eyes to feel the breeze blow through her hair, then she looks at her phone, she has a conflicting look on her face, as if considering a very difficult decision, she takes a deep breath, puts the phone down, and starts climbing to the ledge. 'No... no, no, no. She is not... I have to do something.' He thinks, wondering how is the best approach to a situation like this, he has to convince her to come down.
So he starts walking towards her.
- Beautiful night, huh? - He tries, doing his best to sound natural.
