Lana's Pov
My mouth hung open in shock as I watched Ethan act like a puppy dog who had found its master, it's master being Lancelot. Yes, Lancelot, as in the man I supposedly had one night stand with, as in the hot sauce that I had asked to marry me. How f****d could I get? Worse, he was Ethan's boss and also the CEO of Herod & Co.
Staring at his amusing face, I closed my mouth with my palm, watching him keep his car keys into his pocket. I didn't know what was going on but all I wanted was to disappear to a distant land, never to return, cause how was I supposed to explain to my cheating ex that I really wasn't engaged? Or to Lancelot that I asked him to marry me because of Ethan.
“Wait, Lana!” Ethan said, finally recognising my presence. I wanted to squirm or hide. “You work here? Waw! What a small world!” He laughed. I internally rolled my eyes at his statement. This was the man I dated for four years and yet he didn't know where I worked because he was too disinterested in any matter that concerned me, oblivious of the fact that we had been working in the same company for over a year now, although in different branches.
While I closed my eyes in a failed attempt to hide away from their watchful eyes, I wondered how my life had suddenly turned to this. Why the f**k is Ethan here and why is he calling Lancelot boss? Oh my world! I feel like puking.
“Might I lead you to my team if you don't mind, CEO?” Mr. Greg, my supervisor said after clearing his throat and I was grateful for the save, at least the tension and attention I was receiving will subside now.
“Oh, call me Lancelot and I'll prefer going to my office first,” Lancelot said calmly and Mr. Greg attempted leading the way but he wouldn't bulge. “Lana, is it?” He asked, facing me fully and I nodded slowly. “Lead the way, please.”
I shook my head no as I said, “I… I have a…” I was a stuttering mess but it was all in a bid to avoid being in his presence alone. I had been rather rude and dismissive towards him earlier but how was I to know that he would turn out to be my boss.
Would he fire me? Would he think I've always been this cheap? Oh my world, he has a perfect reason to trample on my weak soul now. It's best I just stay away from him for a while and maybe… just maybe he'd forget about me.
“A… a meet…” I was still stuttering under their gazes but his, his held a glint of amusement and playfulness. “This way,” I said, giving in as I led the way to his exquisite office.
Enroute to his office, I thought about several ways to act. He might not have revealed that he knew me but I was certain that he did. However, I needed a way out ‘cause I was confused as to how to act. Was I to apologize about this morning and yesterday? Heck, at this point I should apologize for my very existence.
If only I could go back in time, I wouldn't have ended up in bed with him, I wouldn't have even proposed to him. It just feels like the universe was against me at this point.
How can one stupid action lead me to this point? First, I had to gullibly buy a ring to propose to my ex boyfriend who turned out to be a cheat. Next, I proposed to a sexy Greek god-like looking stranger, ending up sleeping with him and shoving him off like he didn't matter. And now, he turns out to be my boss?
Shit! What should I do?
I bit at my fingernails nervously as I felt his eyes still staring at me until a light bulb figuratively lit on my head. I did an internal fist bump. Finally, I got an idea of how I should act. All that's left is to just get into character.
You can do this Lana! You can do this!
“Here's your office sir,” I said, pushing the door open and entering inside. I was awed by how gigantic, luxurious and powerful it looked because I had never had the opportunity to actually enter inside, afterall, I was merely a contract staff.
“This looks okay,” he said, nodding his head and bringing me back to reality.
“Welcome to the family,” I said, bowing and smiling awkwardly. Pretending not to know him was my plan and it was working perfectly. I turned around and made for the exit but he stopped me. “Is there something you need me to do for you sir?”
“Sit,” he ordered and I obeyed. His face held seriousness, the kind that tells you not to try anything stupid.
As I sat on the rather comfortable chair, I played with the hem of my shirt, beads of sweat rolling down my cheeks as I tried to avoid looking at his direction. He walked towards me with paper in hand and sat across me, placing the piece of paper on the table, motioning me to pick it up which I did, my eyes widening in shock while I read through it.
“What… What is this?”
“Marriage certificate. I'm sure you can read it clearly, wife.”
I gawked at his composed face. How could this be? The certificate held both our names on it and it clearly stated that we were married. But how? How? This can't be… how? I looked at it again after pinching myself to be sure I wasn't dreaming. My signature was there and also my stamp, it wasn't forged but why couldn't I remember signing anything?
“How?”
“My dearest wife, we got married on the same day you proposed to me and…”
“First, stop calling me your wife!” I exclaimed. I was getting angry now as I only thought he took advantage of me because I can never be this careless to the extent of marrying a stranger. He might be rich but he could also be a murderer. “And, I was drunk!” I yelled as just like a miracle, the events of how it all took place replayed in my mind. “I was drunk and you took advantage of me! How could you?!”
He scoffed and made to speak but I stopped him and said, “You know what, nevermind, I'm getting the divorce papers.” I stood up to leave.
“Sit, I'm not done talking,” he ordered but as I tried to leave, I remembered who he was; my boss. So I sat down. “Seems you have a habit of being brash, uhn?” He added and I rolled my eyes subconsciously.
“I have an offer for you. Be my wife for a year and I'll offer you a blank check or anything you want.” He dropped the bomb and I just couldn't help but burst into a hysterical laughter. Lancelot Herod, the richest billionaire alive actually asking me to marry him, what a joke?
After laughing to my fill, I noticed he was serious and I gazed at him in utter shock. Why was he proposing this to me? “Take your time to think about it and give me an answer before C.O.B tomorrow. You may leave.” He stood up, went straight to his large desk and got to work.
Several questions flooded my mind when I made my way back to my office absentmindedly until I mistakenly bumped into a wall or… was it someone? I raised my head to apologize when I saw his annoying face accompanied by hers. What was she doing here anyways?
I made to leave but she dragged me back. “So this is where you're working?” Cassandra scoffed.
“Suits her, she's a contract staff and just with the snap of my fingers, she's fired. I can't wait to teach you a lesson or two… or ten…” Ethan said, laughing in my face. I rolled my eyes, disinterested in whatever they had to say. I made to leave again but he blocked me, pushing me back a bit. “I see you've grown some wings. You think you can cheat on me and run off with your little man? When I'm done with you, he'll also dump you!”
“Yeah, whatever. Excuse me, I'd like to go to my office if…”
“Shut it!” Cassandra’s palm collided with my cheek, leaving behind a sting from the contact of her slap. “You have no right to talk back and just wait till we're done with you, I'll make sure you resign, bitch.” She pushed me and my back hit the wall, sending pains through my body while they both giggled and walked off.
I thought I was done with them. I thought after all that happened yesterday I wouldn't see them again but here I was, still being bullied by them when I should be the one doing the bullying. They had no remorse, they had no plans to change and it hurt more than the betrayal, maybe even more than the cheating.
“What is it, Lana?” His sweet baritone voice said as I walked back into his office.
“I'll marry you… but on one condition.”
