Cortland
The phone's shrill ring pierces the air, shattering the peaceful silence of the room. I flinch, my heart suddenly racing. As I reach for the device, I see Cadee's name flashing on the screen. A knot forms in my stomach. She's supposed to be with Austin at the dress fitting.
With trembling fingers, I answer the call. "Cadee?" My voice comes out hoarse, betraying my sudden anxiety.
"Cort." Cadee's voice is tight with worry. "Austin didn't show up for her fitting. I can't reach her."
The words hit me like a physical blow. I struggle to process what I'm hearing. "What do you mean, she didn't show up?" I ask, already knowing the answer but needing to hear it again.
"She never arrived," Cadee explains, her voice cracking. "I've been calling and texting, but there's no response."
