42 – The Deadline

CALEB Hunter paced around the room, and the irritating sound of his loafers slapping against the marble filled my ears. I could barely concentrate on anything, but I knew it was not his loafers that were responsible for it. He paused after some time. “Are you sure she is pregnant?” he asked and I had the urge to slam his head against the wall. “I mean, she could be faking as well. And, this is Esther, and there is nothing she cannot do to achieve her targets.” As if I did not know. “She is pregnant,” I confirmed and then muttered, “I just do not know how it is even possible.” I was absolutely certain that I heard a heartbeat other than hers. Unlike human fetuses, wolf genes grow rapidly and hence the heartbeat can be detected early on. But it still did not make sense. Hunter final
