Chapter 12The pain shifted from my body to my head. I couldn’t move. My face pressed against something warm and fleshy. Another warm thing rubbed gentle circles on my back. A thousand ants wriggled on a spot over my breastbone, giving me a weird itch I couldn’t scratch. “Come on, Sophie,” Drew murmured, “climb out before it kills you.” I tried to tell him I was okay. Instead, my mouth made a mumbly, groaning sort of noise. My head hurt so much I wanted to cry again. Whoever had decided to scrape broken glass across my brain could stop anytime. Oh, wait. That was me. “She’s awake,” Gabe said. Drew sighed. His whole body heaved with relief. He stopped rubbing my back to cradle my head and lower my body.
