Chapter 21We ran down the street. My breathing settled into a rhythm, and I had no problem keeping up with Mr. Soccer Player. Gabe yanked me around a corner to a narrower street. At the end of this street, I saw the glimmer of sunshine on water. “Where are we going?” I had a terrible feeling I knew the answer. “To the Willamette.” An icy knife of fear lodged in my gut. “I can’t swim.” “You won’t have to.” He had some plan, and it involved the river. I hated this plan without knowing anything else about it. “But it’s a river.” “And I’m the son of a river god.” “I’m a witch. I can’t go in the water like that. I’ll drown. I don’t want to drown.” Did I sound hysterical? Maybe a little? “I promise you won’t drown. I can’t promise anything else, but I know for a fact you will not drown.
