Chapter 10Portland gazed down at us with a satisfied smile. For once, I’d done something right. I’d pleased someone more powerful than me. My new patron didn’t see me as a disappointment or a waste. I reveled in her pleasure, in the pride she showed for me.
“Why did you do that?” Drew scowled. “You didn’t need to bind them.”
“Hush.” The node reached with an impossibly long arm to touch a finger to his lips. “So much anger today. I brought you here for a reason.”
Drew huffed and crossed his arms. If Gabe and I hadn’t been there, I thought he would’ve turned his back on the node and stormed away.
“You didn’t even give them a choice.”
