Chapter Five: INDIFFERENT

1048 Words
Cara avoided his eyes and her heart began to beat rapidly. There was a flash of anxiety on her face. Did he recognize her as the waitress from the restaurant, or did he realize she wasn’t the woman he had been expecting? She lowered her eyes but it didn’t quench the disturbing look of anger and betrayal that flashed in his eyes. The priest cleared his throat, and it prompted him to plant a light kiss on her rosy lips, and then he pulled back immediately as if she disgusted him. After the wedding, they left the church and her uncle was smiling like he won a jackpot. The chauffeur opened the door and bowed slightly. Cara glanced at Sebastian, who remained engrossed in his work. Only when he felt her gaze did he finally look up. Sebastian pulled out his laptop and began typing. Cara watched in shock. They just got married for heaven's sake. What is he doing with his laptop? He hasn’t even uttered a word since he got into the car. He took off his jacket and rolled his sleeves, exposing his hairy strong arms, and his biceps bulged from the movement. Cara watched in shock as he began to type on his laptop. His cold indifference shattering. The car stopped in front of a huge gate and then it opened wide. And the diver drove through it, the tires crushed hard on the gravel. Cara blinked repeatedly as she looked through the window. Her mouth fell open. What stood before her was the most magnificent mansion she had ever seen. Not even her uncle’s mansion compared. The architecture was breathtakingly luxurious. The chauffeur opened the door quickly and bowed slightly. She turned to Sebastian, who remained engrossed in his laptop. He noticed her gaze upon him and he looked up from his laptop. “You can go in; I have instructed the housekeeper of your arrival; and she’ll see to it that you’re settled in nicely. If you need anything, tell her.” A gasp escaped her lips. His cold, piercing gaze made her shrink in shame. She mustered courage and spoke to him for the first time since their wedding. “We are married, we should go in together.” “I have more important things begging for my attention,” he said rather too harshly, throwing her off balance. Her eyes stung with tears threatening to flow, she looked away from him and sniffed. Then she gathered her flowing gown in her hand before stepping out. The housekeeper was standing outside, beaming in smiles and ready to receive her. “You’re welcome, Mrs. McDermott. My name is Ann, the master has instructed me to take care of you.” Ann was a middle-aged woman with honey-brown hair, which was pulled back in a bun. Her smile was refreshing and Cara smiled back at her. “Thank you,” Cara responded. Ann led the way and took her to the top floor of the building. She opened a door and they walked into a huge bedroom large enough to hold a board meeting. The huge bed was placed at the center of the room. Everything in the room was a show of class and luxury. The beauty before her made her forget the ugly incident between her and Sebastian a while ago. Ann opened a massive closet, revealing rows of luxurious designer clothes. “Master Sebastian ordered for the best. It's all yours.” Cara was yet to recover from the surprise on her face, mixed with awe when Ann opened another huge closet. It contained rows of different expensive designer’s shoes. "If you don’t like them, they can be replaced immediately." “Thanks, if I need anything, I will let you,” Cara said. “Very well then, I will leave you. If you need anything, let me know,” she bowed and then left immediately. Cara sighed the moment Ann closed the door behind her and then she fell to the bed, still dressed in her wedding gown. Just a few days ago, she was a waitress in a small restaurant in town. Now she’s married to one of the wealthiest men in the city, but his cold indifference towards her made a cold shiver run down her spine. Her sister, Jenny, was scheduled for surgery the next day. Cara prayed silently for its success—Jenny was the reason she had agreed to this. Soon she dozed off. She didn’t know how long she had been asleep, her eyes fluttering open. The room was dimly lit and it was dark outside. She heard a sound, and quickly, she sprang up from the bed and rubbed her eyes. A shadow loomed by the doorway. Her pulse spiked. She staggered back, her stomach twisting into a tight knot. Each breath came in ragged gasps. Who—who was standing there? Suddenly, light flooded the room and she quickly covered her eyes with her hand from the harsh glare of the fluorescent bulb. After a moment, she dropped her hand. Standing before her with his hands shoved in his pocket was, Sebastian. He walked into the room and slammed the door shut; the sound made Cara gasp in fear as she shuddered in fright. “What are you doing in my room?” Sebastian chuckled, his eyes gleaming with amusement. “This is my house and I have the right to be in any room.” Her skin prickled with discomfort—she was still in her wedding gown. Meanwhile, Sebastian sat on the bed, its mattress sinking under his weight. As he drew closer to her, Cara sprang up from the bed and ran to the door, then she twisted the door knob to run out but it seemed the door was locked. She turned back to him, her eyes wide with fear. “Please leave,” she pleaded. Sebastian got up and walked towards her in slow, dangerous steps; before she could run from him, he grabbed her waist. He held her firmly against the door. His breath bathed her face and he raised her face with his finger. "You lied to me." His grip tightened, his voice dangerously low. "You're not Vanessa." "So who the hell are you?”
