Chapter 1

Chapter One I woke up to a warm hearth and my eyes began to flutter as I gasped for air. I looked around, finding the cottage to be deserted, but I was worried, who could have helped me? Silence itself was as quiet as the house, I was starting to feel uneasy at the everlasting silence, it reminded me of the arena, when she struck me down. I grabbed at my leg as I tried to stand up. Leaning against the splintered door, I grabbed my sword. I felt like I could collapse again, just like I had in the arena. I used my sword as a crutch by putting it beneath my arm, the pain sill driving me crazy. I opened the door to the glittering stars overhead that shone as if they were sparkling diamonds. The cool night air washed over me, carrying the faint scent of pine and damp earth. I could barely make out the outlines of the forest surrounding the small clearing where the cottage stood. My breaths came in ragged gasps as I hobbled forward, each step sending a jolt of pain up my leg. I glanced down, my chest tightening. A makeshift bandage wrapped around the stump where my leg had been, blood-soaked and hastily tied. Whoever had saved me had done enough to keep me alive, but not much more. Questions swirled in my head: Who had brought me here? Why had they left me alone? And where was *she*? The memory of her blazing eyes and cruel laughter flashed through my mind, and I gritted my teeth against the wave of anger—and fear—that followed. She had left me for dead, but I wasn’t done yet. Not by a long shot. The forest loomed ahead, shadows flickering between the trees as the wind stirred their branches. The stars offered just enough light to navigate, though each step felt like a gamble on uneven ground. My grip on the sword tightened, its blade catching a faint gleam in the moonlight. It was more a talisman than a weapon now, but it gave me a fragile sense of control in this disorienting new reality. A rustle behind me froze me in place. My heart pounded as I whipped around, nearly losing my balance. The sound came again, closer this time—a deliberate crunch of leaves, the snap of a twig. I raised my sword, more out of instinct than capability. “Who’s there?” My voice came out hoarse, but it carried through the stillness. The silence stretched, oppressive and suffocating. Then, a figure appeared from the shadows, their face hidden beneath a dark hood. My grip on the sword tightened as they stepped into the dim light, revealing a wiry frame and gloved hands. “You’re awake,” the figure said, their voice low and steady. “Good.” I staggered back, my balance precarious. “You’re the one who brought me here?” The figure didn’t answer at once. Instead, they glanced at my leg, a faint grimace crossing their face. “You’re lucky to be alive. If I hadn’t saved you—” “Who are you?” I interrupted, cutting through their explanation. My patience was threadbare, shredded by pain and exhaustion. “And what do you want?” The figure hesitated, then pulled back their hood, revealing a face weathered by time and hardship. A long scar ran from their temple to their jaw, a testament to battles fought and survived. Their eyes, sharp and piercing, met mine. “My name is Kael,” they said. “And what I want is the same thing you do. Revenge.” Revenge. The word hit me like a thunderclap, sending a surge of adrenaline through my veins. “What do you know about her?” I demanded, the memory of my opponent’s mocking sneer fuelling my desperation. Kael’s expression darkened. “More than you do, it seems. And if you want to stand a chance against her, you’ll need more than a broken leg and a dull blade.” Their words stung, but I couldn’t deny the truth in them. My body was broken, my spirit frayed. But beneath it all burned a resolve that even she hadn’t managed to extinguish. “Why would you help me?” I asked, narrowing my eyes. Kael’s lips curved into a grim smile. “Because she’s taken something from me too. I was once a sword fighter like you.” For the first time since I woke, a flicker of hope stirred in my chest. It wasn’t much, but it was enough.
