Maria got up before the sun. Not because she had somewhere to be but because sleep no longer wanted her. The house was quiet, the kind of quiet that made her thoughts echo too loudly. She lay still for a while, staring at the ceiling, counting the cracks she had memorized years ago. When that didn't help, she sat up and swung her legs overs the side of the bed. No tears came. She had cried enough the night before. She headed to the bathroom to take her bath. She filled the tub with warm water. Stepping inside, letting the warm water soothe her body.
