Tolu nodded, even though his father couldn’t see him. He pushed open the door to the unit, the musty smell hitting him like a wave. He scanned the dimly lit space, his eyes landing on the desk in the corner. He rushed over, opening the drawer and finding the key nestled among old papers.
“Got it,” he said, his heart racing as he pocketed the key. He moved to the back corner, where he found the lock box covered in dust. With trembling hands, he inserted the key and turned it. The lock clicked open, and he lifted the lid.
Inside, he found a stack of documents, all neatly organized. Tolu’s heart sank as he realized the weight of what he was holding. These papers contained information that could expose the armed men’s operations, their connections, and their illegal activities. This was what Malik wanted.
“Tolu, are you there?” his father’s voice crackled through the phone.
“Tolu, are you there?” his father’s voice crackled through the phone.
“I found it,” Tolu said, his voice barely above a whisper. “But what do I do now?”
Get out of there. "Don't let them see you", his father warned. You need to find a way to negotiate with Malik. Use the documents as leverage to get Aisha back.
Tolu nodded, even though he knew his father couldn’t see him. He quickly closed the lock box and tucked it under his arm. As he turned to leave, he heard a noise outside the unit. His heart raced as he realized he wasn’t alone.
“Who’s there?” a voice called out, and Tolu froze. It was Malik, and he was not alone.
Tolu’s mind raced as he ducked behind a stack of boxes, trying to remain hidden. He could hear Malik’s voice growing closer, the sound of footsteps echoing in the small space. Panic surged through him as he realized he had to act fast.
“Search the place!” Malik ordered, his voice sharp and commanding. “He has to be here somewhere!”
Tolu’s heart pounded in his chest as he held his breath, praying they wouldn't find him. He could hear the sound of footsteps getting closer, the tension in the air thickening with every passing second. He needed a plan, and he needed it fast.
As he crouched behind the boxes, Tolu’s mind raced. He thought about Aisha and how much she meant to him. He couldn’t let Malik and his men take her away from him. He had to find a way to turn the tables.
“Check behind those boxes!” one of Malik’s men shouted, and Tolu felt a surge of adrenaline. He had to move. He glanced around, looking for an escape route. The only way out was through the door, but it was too risky.
“Dad, they’re here,” Tolu whispered into the phone, his voice trembling. “I need to get out.” They’re searching for the unit.
“Stay calm, Tolu. "You can do this". ""Look for another way out,” his father urged, his voice steady despite the urgency of the situation.
Tolu’s eyes darted around the unit, and then he spotted a small window near the ceiling, partially obscured by cobwebs. It was a long shot, but it might be his only chance. He took a deep breath, steeling himself for what he had to do.
“Okay, I’m going to try to get out through the window,” Tolu said, his heart racing. “I’ll call you back as soon as I can.”
“Be careful!” his father warned, but Tolu had already hung up. He quickly climbed over the boxes, trying to make as little noise as possible. He reached the wall beneath the window and jumped, grabbing the ledge with both hands.
With a surge of strength, he pulled himself up, his heart pounding as he heard Malik’s men getting closer. He could see the light filtering through the window, a beacon of hope. He pushed himself up higher, straining to get his legs over the ledge.
Just as he was about to swing his legs through, he heard the door to the unit slam open. “He’s not here! ""Keep looking!” Malik shouted, frustration evident in his voice.
Tolu’s heart raced as he finally managed to pull himself through the window, scraping his arms against the rough edges. He landed on the ground outside with a soft thud, quickly rolling to his feet. He glanced back at the storage unit, the door wide open, and he knew he had to move fast.
He took off running, his feet pounding against the pavement as he sprinted away from the facility. He could hear voices behind him, but he didn’t dare look back. He had to get to safety and figure out his next move.
As he ran, he pulled out his phone and dialed his father’s number. “Dad, I’m out! But they’re after me!”
“Good job, Tolu! Head to the old lounge on Maple Street. "It is a safe spot". ""I’ll meet you there,” his father instructed.
Tolu nodded, even though his father couldn’t see him. He turned sharply, heading toward Maple Street, his mind racing with thoughts of Aisha and the documents he had just secured. He had to find a way to use them to save her.
When he reached the lounge, he slipped inside, the familiar smell of coffee and pastries wrapping around him like a warm blanket. He quickly found a table in the back, trying to catch his breath as he waited for his father.
Minutes felt like hours as he anxiously tapped his fingers on the table. Finally, the door swung open, and his father rushed in, looking around before spotting Tolu. He hurried over, his expression a mix of relief and concern.
“Tolu! ""Are you okay?” his father asked, sliding into the seat across from him.
