Tolu felt a surge of frustration but forced himself to remain calm. “Because I know how to play the game too, Malik. I’ve done my homework. I know about your connections, your dealings. If you don’t let Aisha go, I’ll make sure everyone knows about your operations. You’ll be the one in danger, not me.” Malik’s expression darkened, and he stepped closer, his men flanking him like shadows. “You’re playing a dangerous game, boy. You think you can outsmart me? I’ve been in this business long before you were born.” Tolu’s heart raced, but he pressed on. “I’m not trying to outsmart you. I’m trying to help you. You’re in a corner, and you know it. The authorities are closing in. If you let Aisha go, I can help you create a narrative that makes you look like a victim, not a criminal.” Malik’s eyes flickered with uncertainty, and for a moment, Tolu thought he might be getting through to him. “What’s in it for you?” Malik asked, his voice low and dangerous. Tolu hesitated, knowing he had to tread carefully. “Aisha’s life is in your hands. If you care about your own survival, you’ll see that this is the best option for you. You can walk away from this, but only if you let her go.” Malik’s men exchanged glances, and Tolu could sense the tension in the air. Malik was weighing his options, and Tolu knew he had to keep the pressure on. “You don’t want to be known as the man who killed a girl just to protect his secrets. That’s not the legacy you want, is it?” Malik’s jaw tightened, and he took a step back, contemplating Tolu’s words. “You’re a clever kid, I’ll give you that. But cleverness doesn’t always win. Sometimes, brute force does.” Tolu’s mind raced. He needed to buy more time. “What if we made a deal? You let Aisha go, and I’ll give you the documents. You can decide what to do with them. If you think they’re worthless, then you can just toss them aside. But if you think they’re valuable, you’ll have the upper hand.” Malik’s eyes narrowed, and he seemed to be considering the proposition. “And how do I know you won’t just run off with her once I let her go?” “Because I’m not a monster,” Tolu replied, his voice steady. I’m just a kid trying to save his friend. If you let her go, I’ll stay right here. You can keep the documents until you’re sure I’m not lying. Malik’s men shifted uneasily, and Tolu could see the wheels turning in Malik’s mind. “You’re asking me to trust you, and trust is a rare commodity in my world. What’s to stop me from just taking the documents and Aisha both?” Tolu took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the moment. “Because if you do that, you’ll have a war on your hands. I have people who care about Aisha, and they won’t stop until they find her. You’ll be hunted, Malik. You know that.” Malik’s expression hardened, but Tolu could see the flicker of doubt in his eyes. “You’re playing a dangerous game, kid. But I’ll admit, you’ve got guts. I respect that.” “Then let’s make a deal,” Tolu urged, his heart pounding. “Let Aisha go, and I’ll give you the documents. You can decide what to do with them. If you think they’re worthless, you can throw them away. But if you think they’re valuable, you’ll have the upper hand.” Malik’s gaze shifted to his men, who were whispering among themselves. Tolu could feel the tension in the air, the weight of the decision hanging over them. Finally, Malik nodded slowly. “Alright, kid. You’ve got yourself a deal. But remember, if you’re lying, I will find you, and I will make you pay.” Tolu felt a rush of relief wash over him, but he knew they weren’t out of the woods yet. “Just let her go first. Then we can talk about the documents.” Malik waved his hand dismissively, and one of his men stepped forward, pulling out a phone. “Get her here,” he ordered, his voice cold and commanding. Tolu’s heart raced as he waited, every second feeling like an eternity. He could only hope that Aisha would be okay, that she hadn’t been harmed in any way. The tension in the room was palpable, and Tolu could feel the weight of Malik’s gaze on him, assessing, calculating. Moments later, the door creaked open, and Aisha was pushed into the room, her hands bound and a look of confusion and fear etched on her face. Tolu’s heart sank at the sight of her, but he quickly masked his concern with determination. “Aisha!” he called out, stepping forward instinctively. “Stop right there!” one of Malik’s men barked, raising a gun to Tolu’s chest. Tolu froze, his heart pounding in his ears. “I’m not going to hurt her,” he said, his voice steady despite the fear coursing through him. “I just want to make sure she’s okay.” Aisha’s eyes widened as she took in the scene. “Tolu? What’s going on?” “Just stay calm,” he replied, trying to convey reassurance. “I’m here to get you out.” Malik stepped forward, a smirk playing on his lips. “You see, Aisha, this kid thinks he can negotiate with me. He thinks he can save you. But the truth is, he’s just a pawn in a much larger game.” Aisha’s gaze darted between Tolu and Malik, her expression shifting from confusion to anger. “You’re not a pawn, Tolu! You’re—” “Enough!” Malik interrupted, his voice booming. “You’re both wasting my time.” Let’s finalize this deal. Tolu took a deep breath, trying to keep his composure. “You let her go first, and then I’ll give you the documents. That’s the deal.” Malik’s eyes narrowed, and he exchanged glances with his men. “You think I’m going to just hand over a girl like that? You’re not in a position to make demands.”
