*Noah POV*
I had to take a couple of days to myself to really make sure that I wanted to carry out what Nick and I had discussed. Would I be able to quell my anger and hurt enough to stop myself from hurting her again? Let’s hope so, because my gut kept telling me that this was the right thing to do.
She looked so small in the wheelchair as I pushed her to the pack house. I could have easily taken the car or a golf cart, but even though the air was cool, it was a nice day. She had been cooped up in the hospital for nearly two weeks. I’m sure she could use the air.
“Um, Noah? How am I going to get up to the alpha floor?” she asked. I hadn’t thought that far ahead. The elevator had been out for nearly a month, and the service company was taking their time in coming to fix it.
“One of us will carry you, and the other can carry your things. Easy fix. Are you alright out here in the cool air?” I asked.
She quickly nodded. She needed a shower, and it wasn’t going to be me who helped her. I sent Juliet a mind link and asked her to have Holly meet us at Hope’s room. I know Hope trusts her, so it was our best option.
“I got her. You can carry her bags,” Nick said from behind. I turned to give him a look, and he threw his hands up.
“I got her. I have to prove to her that I am not going to hurt her,” I replied to him in a mind link. He didn’t argue, so it was settled. I would carry her the two flights to our floor.
When she pulled the hood up onto her head, I noticed she was trying to hide. That was when I saw the group of Omega girls sitting on the side of the pack house on their breaks. All of them staring in our direction.
“Hey, Alphas, nice day, isn’t it?” one of them hollered out. Always trying to get on our good side, as if they stood a chance.
Neither of us replied, nor did we even look their way. Giving them any hope wasn’t something we were entertaining.
“Holly is meeting us at your room to help you with a shower, or bath. Whichever you prefer. I know a good shower might make you feel better,” I told her.
“Thank you. You didn’t have to trouble her. She is working on some classes. She is trying to get out of the kitchen so she can adopt her baby cousin,” she replied.
I had no idea any of that was happening. Holly was a good person who also got the s**t end of the stick. If I approved of how she helped Hope, then I would see that she got the position she wanted, and a cottage to ensure the adoption.
We arrived at the front door, and I asked one of the guards on duty to make sure the wheelchair got back to the hospital.
“Alright girl, put your arms around my neck, and tell me if I hurt you. We will do this as gently as possible,” I said.
She looked at me like I was crazy, because she didn’t hear me tell Nick that I was doing this. However, she didn’t fight me on it. She did as I asked, and I did as I said.
People stopped to stare as we walked in, and after receiving a glare, they would continue on their way. When Hope noticed their curious glances, she buried her face into my chest.
I don’t know why, but the gesture pissed me off. Not because she did it, but because the guilt began to eat at me again.
“Calm your s**t. If I can smell your anger, so can she. Don’t guilt her like that again,” Nick said in our link.
I quickly moved up the stairs, and when we went to her door, Holly was waiting. Thank the goddess.
Holly opened the door, and I carried Hope inside and sat her on her bed.
“Like I said, Holly is going to help you get a bath or shower. What would you like for dinner? I’ll have it brought up to you. Holly, if you would like to join her, you are welcome to. Thank you for your help,” I said.
Hope asked Holly what she would like, and they agreed on shredded beef enchiladas with rice, beans and all the toppings and sauces to go on them. She asked if they could get cheesecake for dessert, I agreed.
“Oh, before I forget. There is a dressing closet full of things you might need, and plenty of soaps, oils, and other toiletries in the bathroom linen closet. All of it is yours,” I said, and left without saying another word. I wanted out of there before I said something stupid or rude.
I went straight to my office. Diving head first into work sounded like a good idea. However, my mind kept going back to how good it felt to have her in my arms. It felt even better when she chose to cuddle in closer for protection.
I wanted her. I wanted to accept her as my mate, and if she will learn to not be afraid of me, I will do just that.
“What the hell was all of that about? What pissed you off?” Nick asked when he walked through the door.
“Not now. I want to talk to you about something else, and then I’ll tell you. I need to get my mind off of something for a moment. We need to choose a Beta and a Gamma. We need to go to a few packs here soon for meetings, and there has to be someone here to watch over the pack. Any ideas?” I asked.
There was literally no one in this pack that I felt comfortable enough with to run this place in our absence, and it was a requirement that the Beta and Gamma were someone from the pack.
“Man, I have no idea. I know who I would like as Beta, but he would have to renounce their
allegiance to his father and pack. I know for a fact that he won’t do that, even if our packs are allies. Pack wise, I know who I would like to choose as Gamma. He would do right by us, the pack, and most of all, no matter what has happened, he would do right by Hope,” Nick replied.
He now had my attention. “Who? Because I can’t think of a single soul I would trust with her,” I said.
“Matthew Asher. He’s just graduated from the advanced warrior program. He also is in the running for assistant commander. He is as loyal as he comes, and an all around good guy. He’s easy to get along with as well,” he explained.
Matt never even crossed my mind, but he was a great choice to take care of the Luna when the time came. He was extremely trustworthy, so I agreed to that choice. Now, who could we appoint Beta? It had to be someone both Nick and I could get along with.
“I agree with Matt. Now an idea came to mind when you mentioned the assistant commander position. What about Collin Reynolds for Beta? We’ve always gotten along with him more than anyone in school. His dad and family are respected throughout the pack, and even though he is the current commander, we could easily find someone else to take his place,” I suggested.
“I was hoping you would mention Collin. I didn’t want it to seem like I was playing favorites by mentioning him. I say that’s who we go with,” Nick replied as he smiled from ear to ear. He then circled back around to what was bugging me earlier.
He wasn’t going to give up on that one. So, I told him everything.
