I cracked my eyes open and quickly realized that Kyle wasn’t beside me on the bed.
He must have gone downstairs, he's probably with Tristan.
Tristan.
I clenched my fists when I registered that scumbag was within the four walls of my home.
I threw my leg over the bed and froze.
Bonnie, Bonnie was in the same house as that monster!
“Bonnie?” I slid my feet into my slippers and I made my way downstairs.
Kyle and Tristan were on the couch, having some whiskey when I arrived.
Bonnie wasn’t anywhere near Tristan, Great.
I clutched the hem of the robe, pulling it so it would cover me more.
But that didn’t stop Tristan from raking his eyes over my body, making me cringe internally.
“Isn’t it too early for alcohol?” I questioned, staring at my husband with raised brows.
“It’s not every time I get to reconnect with old friends,” he defended.
“I’m sorry Marlene, it’s my fault, my apologies,” Tristan said, feigning innocence.
“Besides we’re celebrating.”
I arched my eyebrows, “celebrating what?”
“Tristan and I are now officially business partners.”
My face twisted into a scowl. I saw the glint of amusement in Tristan’s eyes and it made my blood boil.
“What?” the word rolled out of my tongue.
Kyle paused, shooting me a confused look. “Anything the problem?” he asked, setting the whiskey bottle down.
“No, it’s just that this was too sudden, when did you two even meet after such a long time that you’re already business partners?”
“Last night after you took Bonnie to her room and went to sleep, Tristan said he wanted to talk. He proposed a business idea and it was so good I had to jump on it.”
“Of course he did,” I snarled, eyeing Tristan.
“What’s with the attitude?” Kyle asked. I faced him.
“Look I don’t have a problem with you making business partners, all I’m saying is that you didn’t even take your time to think this through, have you drafted an agreement? Did you inform your board members? Have you carried out a risk assessment?”
“Are you insinuating that Kyle can’t decide without informing you?”
I shot Tristan a glare, “That’s not what I said, what I’m saying is this decision is too sudd—.”
“So in other words you’re saying your husband lacks better judgment?” Tristan pressed on.
“No-“ I turned to Kyle. “Babe you understand what I’m trying to say-“
“That’s exactly what you’re saying, Marlene.”
“Fine! It’s reckless, you barely know him, you don’t know what type of person he is, it’s been years! He’s not the high school teenager you knew Kyle!”
Kyle furrowed his eyebrow, “Where is all this coming from Marlene? What’s gotten into you!” he snapped.
I flinched. Kyle never yelled.
“You’re yelling at me because of him?” I retorted, pointing at Tristan.
“You’re being rude and unreasonable, I don’t need your permission to choose business partners!” Kyle barked and stormed off.
I watched in disbelief as he left.
“Fine! Don’t listen to me, go!” I called after him as tears stung my eyes.
“Tsk tsk tsk.” Tristan tsked and I felt fingers wrap around my arm from behind. “Don’t touch me.” I gritted out and pulled away.
“You should give him some time, he’ll come around.”
I scoffed, “Look at you trying to act like a marriage counselor, this was your fault!”
Tristan stepped forward.
“You must think I’m still the stupid gullible Layla you used to manipulate, right?”
“You were never stupid or gullible, don’t say that,” he said in a hushed tone as he leaned forward.
I slapped him, my palm itching to do it again.
The brown-haired man was stunned and traced his cheeks with his fingers. “There’s plenty where that came from, just try me.”
He smirked, “I like this feisty side of you,”
“Eat s**t Tristan, read my lips, I will make you pay. Let’s see how much Kyle wants to be business partners when he finds out the truth and what you did.”
I went after Kyle, I could hear Tristan’s footsteps behind me but I didn’t care. Kyle was outside by the garden. “Kyle-“
“Not now Marlene.”
I looked over at Tristan who wore a small smirk. I turned back to Kyle. “There’s something I need to tell you.”
“Can it wait? I’m looking for my daughter.”
Speaking of which, where is Bonnie?
“Bonnie! Get back inside,” Kyle said as he walked towards the ajar gate, Tristan following behind him.
I followed them out, wondering why which of the maids opened the gates for her in the first place.
As soon as I stepped out, my breath hitched.
A car was speeding down the road and Bonnie was standing directly in front of it, with her teddy clutched within her arms. My eyes widened as I shrieked and ran towards my daughter.
But before I or Kyle could reach her, Tristan lunged forward, grabbing Bonnie and rolling over to the other side of the road.
That car sped past. “Retard!” Kyle cursed as he rushed towards them.
He picked Bonnie up, placing her on his hip. “Bonnie, Tristan, are you two okay?”
“I’m fine, it's just a little scratch, Is Bonnie okay?” he asked.
Bonnie nodded. “Thank you for saving me, you’re my hero,” her tiny voice rang.
“I cannot thank you enough, Tristan, really,” Kyle added.
Tristan shot a mocking glance my way while Kyle brought out his phone, muttering something about calling estate security.
“Here give her, “ I managed to voice, stepping forward to carry her. “Thank you, “ I mumbled reluctantly.
“It’s nothing,” he replied.
I glanced at Kyle, then back at Tristan, there was no way I could break the news to Kyle, not right now, it would only worsen things.
I shot Tristan a look, he won this round.
We all stepped back inside and I set Bonnie down, checking to make sure she didn’t have any injury.
It was just a small scratch on her elbow which I planted a kiss on. “Next time don’t ever go outside again okay?”
“Yes Mommy,” she walked up to Tristan and hugged his leg. “Thank you.”
He rubbed her head, “don’t mention it kiddo.”
I waited for her to skip back inside before facing Tristan. “This isn’t over yet.”
He grinned, “Oh, far from it.”
