I squeezed another piece of paper and tossed it into a bin. Tristan’s presence in this house was affecting my creativity, I couldn’t come up with any single design. I sighed and tossed my pencil away as well. At this point, I was sure that I needed a break, some fresh air would help me think straight, so I got to my feet and made my way downstairs. I opened the fridge, scavenging for anything available. Millie’s voice rang from the sitting room, giggling. I twisted my face, closing the fridge as I walked towards the sitting room. Tristan was there helping her build her Legos while she held the instruction. “Millie,” I called, she raised her head and looked at me. “Mommy!” She set down the piece of paper she was holding and walked up to me. I picked her up. “I thought you said the two of us would arrange your Legos?” I questioned in a soft voice. “The girl was bored and she wanted me to help—” “I wasn’t speaking with you. Millie baby, go to your room, I want to have a word with Tristan okay?” I dropped her on the ground. “Okay Mommy, don’t be angry at him, it was my idea to arrange the Legos,” she explained. I smiled, “I’m not mad, baby. Go to your room, we’ll complete building your Lego city later.” She skipped to her room, her ponytail swinging. I waited for her to be out of earshot range before I faced Tristan. “When are you leaving?” “When Kyle tells me to,” he retorted. I scoffed, then placed my hands on my hips. “Don’t think I don’t see through your little games, Tristan.” I spat and narrowed my eyes at him. “I can bet that you had something to do with that accident that almost killed my daughter, you just wanted to use her to play hero.” “How could I possibly have something to do with an over-speeding car?” I furrowed my eyebrow at him, “then explain how the gates were open that morning? I asked all the workers, none of them had stepped out of the house. Tiffany said she locked the gates in the night when we returned from the event, so tell me.” “How am I supposed to have an explanation for your faulty gates or lying maids?” “You don’t fool me, Tristan. Don’t think I won’t tell Kyle, because your little trick can only delay me, not stop me.” “Fine! I’ll leave!” He suddenly yelled, catching me off guard. “I can’t stay here and let you accuse me of trying to hurt Millie, the daughter of my childhood friend! Millie is like a niece to me, I can’t take your accusations, Marlene, ever since we met you’ve been attacking me!” I was too stunned to speak, wondering what warranted his outburst when Kyle’s voice boomed. “What’s going on here?” “I—” “She wants me to leave, and I’ll respect her wishes, after all, she’s your wife,” Tristan said. What a snake! “It’s not like that, Kyle, I...” I trailed off, unsure of how exactly to defend myself, Tristan had succeeded in setting me up. “You don’t need to explain anything, I overheard everything.” “You only overheard him shouting, you weren’t here when-” “That’s enough, Marlene! I’ve had enough! You’re so difficult!” he turned around and left the house. Tristan walked away too, his shoulders brushing against mine as he left. I gritted my teeth in anger, at this point would Kyle still believe me if I told him the truth? I sat down on the couch and took a deep breath. Millie walked over to me. “Why are you and Daddy fighting? Is it because of Uncle Tristan?” I nodded, slightly relieved that Millie could understand that I wasn’t the villain, but the words that followed were like a slap to the face. “Just stop picking on Uncle Tristan so we can all be friends, please Mommy.” I shook my head and grabbed her arms softly, “I’m not picking on him, he’s a bad person Millie, a very bad person you hear me?” She broke away from my hold and scurried off to her room, crying. Then, Tristan showed up, walking towards the door. “You better leave!” I spat. He smirked and walked away. I stormed to my bedroom and decided to have a warm bath to calm my nerves. I just stepped out of the bathroom when there was a knock on the door. I wrapped the towel against my chest and opened the door, it was Millie holding a rose and a letter. “Awwn what’s that? Is it from Daddy?” I asked, looking around. “No, it’s from Uncle Tristan. He came back to give me this, he said it’s for you.” I fought the urge to shred the letter in Millie’s presence. “Throw it in the bin, Millie.” She frowned, stomping her feet. “Mommy just forgive Uncle Tristan please!” I grabbed the letter, opening it to realize it was dinner reservations with a note that says ‘I’m sorry.’ I sighed, “I’ll do anything for you baby but I can’t go out with Tristan.” She sprawled on the ground, crying. “I won’t eat anything until you make up with him!” I pushed back loose strands of my hair, “fine, I’ll have dinner with him.” Her face brightened up and she hugged me. “Now shoo let me dress.” When I closed the door, I plopped on my bed with a sigh. Maybe I’d use this opportunity to talk to Tristan one last time and tell him to back off. It was now evening, I grabbed my purse and made my way downstairs. “Tiffany, please keep an eye out for Millie for me, okay, I’m going to see Tristan. Also, is Kyle back?” “No ma’am.” “Alright.” I got down from my car, peering at the building ahead. The restaurant was supposed to be in this building. I made my way in and took the elevator to the second floor. When I stepped out, I quickly noticed that this floor was deserted. I swiveled my hand around while looking at the paper in my hand to confirm that I was in the right place. Then I saw a man walking towards me. “Tristan?” But I quickly realized It wasn’t Tristan, I turned trying to rush towards the stairs but he yanked my hair. Before I could cry for help, something collided with my head and I passed out.
