I found myself enraptured by the very thought of my muscular Amish man every day but on the days when I visited the job site of my clients sprawling new home….his disdain for my very presence was evident.
On this particular morning, I had brought a tray of coffee and doughnuts for the work crew as a gesture of goodwill to build rapport with workers. It was the beginning of September and the autumn air made the morning crisp and the coffee and doughnuts were a welcome treat so early in the morning
We were all sitting out on the porch getting a fresh start to our day when the site Foreman Doug tapped me on the arm, nodding to my Amish man who trotting off to the tool shed in a disgruntled fashion,
“Samuel is typically a nice fellow but he is right nasty twit whenever you’re around. Wonder why that is? You reckon?”
“It’s my winning disposition, Doug?” I said with one eyebrow raised, “ Strong independent females can have that effect you know?” Having known Doug for as long I had, I knew that he would appreciate this comment or I was in for a lecture.
“Amarys, I appreciate your independence and you're one hell of a designer but I have to run a smooth ship. Just promise to be nice and don’t rock the boat, please. Please smooth this over and make nice.” Doug said with a sympathetic air to him.
I smiled knowingly, I turned to Doug and said as a gesture of goodwill, "Ok! I will do my best to smooth this over.”
The truth was I, I had known Doug all my life. He and my Dad had been friends since childhood. I owed Doug a lot. He went to bat for me when some construction crew felt that I was too young and inexperienced to be an Interior Designers, or my ideas were too out of the box….Doug always had my back. The truth was...we made a great team! Ugh! I needed to go fix this.
I took a deep breath and I felt my insides shaking as I headed off to the tool shed to confront my mysterious Amish man who now held a name.
Samuel.
