CHAPTER TWO

1030 Words
Emma could not change the past, but she could shape the future. And if that meant standing up to Ethan, confronting her feelings, and fighting for her father's life, then so be it. She would take this challenge directly, with nothing but her courage and love for her dad. Emma bent forward and left a soft kiss on her father's forehead. "I'll be back, Dad," she said. "I swear. We'll get through this, both of us." She added. Determined, Emma left the room, heels clicking on the cold tile floor as she walked toward Ethan's office. Time was running out and there was no time to waste. As she walked, she couldn't help but feel this nagging feeling of unease. The hospital, which was once a beacon of hope and healing, now felt like a battleground, and Ethan the invincible enemy. Emma took a deep breath, preparing herself for the conversation to come. She knew she had to be strong, stand her ground and make him see reasons, for her father's sake, and for herself. Pulling up to Ethan's office, Emma knocked on the door firmly and waited for his response. When it came, his voice was cool and detached, as always. "Enter." He called out. Emma entered, pushing open the door to find Ethan seated behind his desk, those piercing blue eyes staring at her. The air was heavy with an uncomfortable silence, tension between them etched in the air. She breathed deeply, bracing herself before speaking. "Ethan," Emma called, her voice strong despite the turmoil inside her. "I know we've got a lot of history between us, and I know it's complicated. But right now, all that matters is my dad.” She said calmly. “I want you to promise me you'll do everything you can to save him. That you'll put aside our past and be the very best doctor you can be for him." She continued. Ethan's expression didn't change, but Emma would have sworn she saw something flash in his eyes. "And what about you Emma?" he breathed. "What are you willing to put aside for your father's sake?" Ethan asked. Emma hesitated, taken aback by the question. "What do you mean?" She asked curiously. Ethan rose, circling the desk to face her, his eyes ablaze. "Are you prepared to put aside your pride? Your fear? Your anger?. He asked. Because I think, deep down, that's what's truly keeping us apart. Not our past history, but your unwillingness to let it go." Ethan said confidently. "I think you're still holding on to the pain and bitterness of our breakup, and it's clouding your judgment. It's making you see me as the enemy instead of the man who can save your father's life." Ethan added. His words stung, but Emma also knew that there was truth in them. She took a deep breath and considered his question. “Could she put aside her own feelings, her own fears, and consider only what her father required? Could she trust Ethan, despite what he had done to her, to do the right thing for her father? "Yes," Emma said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "I can do that. For my father, I can put aside my pride, my fear, my anger. I can trust you to do what's best for him, even if it's setting aside my own feelings." She said. Ethan's expression eased a bit, and he nodded, as if he was satisfied with your response. "Good," Ethan said. "Then we're clear," he continued. "I assure you, Emma, I will do everything within my power to save your father. “I will be the best surgeon I can be, and I will not allow our past to cloud my judgment." Ethan said reassuringly. He paused, his gaze sweeping hers. "But in return, I need you to trust me. To support me, not undermine me. And to be honest with me, about everything. No secrets, no lies. Can you do that?" Emma nodded, the weight lifting from your shoulders. "Yes, I can do that. I promise." She said. Ethan extended his hand, a gesture of truce. "Then we have a deal?" He said. Emma placed her hand in his, feeling the warmth of his skin against her own. For a moment, she was brought back to the past when life was not so complicated, when their love for each other was all they needed to conquer any obstacle. Then reality set in, and she withdrew her hand, breaking the contact. "Thank you, Ethan," Emma said to him, your voice steady. "I'm grateful for everything you're doing for my father. And I promise, I'll do my part of the bargain." She added. He nodded gravely. "I'll hold you to that. Now, let's discuss the details of the surgery, and what you can expect during the next few days." As they both sat down, the atmosphere in the room shifted, the tension easing a bit. They began to talk about the logistics of the procedure, the risks involved, and the recovery. Ethan's voice was calm and reassuring, his medical background clear as he explained each step of the process. Emma was impressed during the conversation by the passion he had for his work, the dedication he had to his patients. It was easy to see why he was ranked one of the best in his field. As the session closed, Ethan stood up, making it clear that the discussion was over. "I'll report back to you on your father," he told her, speaking in a professional tone. "And Emma, thank you for trusting me. It means more than you know." He said with a hint of sympathy in his tone. Emma nodded, a mixture of feelings swirling inside her. “Relief, gratitude, and something else, something she couldn't place her finger on. "Thank you, Ethan," Emma said. "For everything." She added. With a final nod, she turned and walked out of the office, head reeling from the news she had just received. The road ahead was uncertain, filled with pitfalls and difficulties, but for the first time since her father's hospitalization, she felt the promise of hope.
