DominanceSouth Melbourne demolished their semi-final opponents in the first of the finals games, their second place securing the home advantage with a near-capacity crowd of well over eleven thousand packed into the Lakeside Stadium. Niko Toulaise had struck the post twice in the first half against third-placed Adelaide City, and it threatened to turn into ‘one of those games’. That was until Nicky Stolic raised the roof with a shot from halfway that looped over the visiting keeper to open the scoring early in the second half. It was one-way traffic after that; Jarrod got on the scoresheet with a tap-in for the second and Niko grabbed the third and fourth goals late on to give the scoreline a true reflection of their dominance.
