The Monster Within (An interview with Murphy Mark) Dr. Julius Howard: Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that causes delusions, hallucinations and disorganized speech and behavior. People with it feel out of touch and distant from other people such as friends and family. They lack feelings and emotions that normal people have, they lack apathy. Some even have less ability to experience pleasure. It's unknown what causes Schizophrenia, doctors say its nothing the person did wrong just a mixture of environmental and genetic factors. Most kids have imaginary friends but only a select few have multiple imaginary friends. Interacting with people in one's head is damaging to a child's development and growth in social gatherings. Most men start to show symptoms between eighteen and twenty two years of age. According to his record, Murphy Mark was showing signs of schizophrenia when he was thirteen. That was the first time he was evaluated by a therapist and his file said he showed several symptoms of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. His physician made a note that he seemed very hostile. When I first read his file, an hour before I met him for the first time, I wondered when it all began for him. Was he born a monster? My first impression of Murphy was very surprising. He was a genius, a visionary, and a deranged psychopath. Murphy Mark: When I was a child I never knew what was wrong with me. Why I could see my dead brother. I thought I was special and he was an angel that had come down from heaven to guide me through my life. I never dreamed I would be guiding others through their lives. Now I know I'm just a killer. A natural born predator. Every person I come across all I can think of is how many ways I could slaughter their existence. It was hard growing up with such rage trapped inside me. Sometimes I would just snap and someone would get hurt. I remember in my early teens my mother took me to see a therapist, Dr. Riley. I didn't enjoy our sessions together. Dr. Eric Riley (Child Therapist): Murphy started out in a state of depression when I first met him. I thought I could help him but the more I got to know him the sooner I realized he was far from saving. His mother was such a sweet woman I never could understand how she raised such a monster. When I recommended Murphy be put in a facility she pulled him from my program and told me to "f**k off". Very sweet woman...and very protective. Murphy Mark: November sixth nineteen ninety-one was the year I murdered Dr. Riley. I shoved a knife right through his smart mouth. It was the first kill I shared with another. Nancy was a ruthless woman. We both sampled his brain to see if it would make us smarter. We were such crazy kids back then. Nancy Wright: Murphy was my soul mate. We were going to get married once we made it to Mexico. Everything about our relationship was perfect. We could go anywhere, do anything, and kill anyone. There is no better feeling than taking someone's life and watching their soul leave their flesh. It's so...exhilarating I almost came the first time Murphy killed a man in front of me. We had s*x right on top of his dead body. Murphy Mark: Ah, Nancy, she was something. Great girl, she was everything I ever wanted but once she started experimenting with poisons I had to kill her. You can't trust a person who poisons people. What if I pissed her off one night and she poisoned my dinner? I couldn't live looking over my shoulder everyday. It was easy evading the police all those years but sleeping with someone that could kill me with a glass of water...no thanks.
