My dad sat on the couch in the library, eyes closed, face shiny with sweat and contorted in pain. Grandma and Arthur were getting my uncle’s car ready so Dad could ride comfortably to Omaha while Kat and Kinley packed a bag so he would have everything he needed while at the hospital. I stood frozen, unable to leave his side.
“Don’t look so worried, hummingbird.” He opened his eyes and managed to smile. “I’ll be at the hospital for a week or two and the doctors will figure out how to get me back to normal, and then I’ll be home. Just like last month.”
