I stared at the notebook. Black ink on white paper. Names. Facts. Everything I should have memorized, and now couldn’t recognize.
Kai. Age five. My son. Has gold eyes. Likes pancakes.
The words meant nothing. I knew they were true because I had written them. But the connection wasn't there. The sensation of being his mom. The love. The bond. All of it gone. Taken. Payment for power.
