Chapter 8

Kaelira’s POV I didn’t move. Not even when the wind shifted or even when the guards behind me adjusted their grip on their weapons. I just stood there… staring at him. Because something was wrong. Not outside. But Inside. My fingers curled slightly at my sides as that same strange sensation brushed against my ribs again. Not pain. Not the broken bond, I knew what that emptiness felt like now. This was different. Sharper. Quieter. Like something… noticing him. The Lycan didn’t look away from me. Not once. “You’ve seen what you came to see,” I said, my voice steady even though my pulse had picked up. “You made your point. Leave.” Serenya shifted closer behind me. I could feel it without turning, her tension, her readiness. Maelin hadn’t moved at all. That was worse. It meant she was watching everything. Waiting and calculating. The Lycan tilted his head slightly. “You command well for someone who was bound yesterday.” A flicker of irritation passed through me. “I don’t answer to you.” “No,” he agreed. “You don’t.” His gaze dropped briefly to my chest. To where the bond used to sit. My breath hitched before I could stop it. He noticed. Of course he did. “Empty,” he said quietly. My jaw tightened. “Careful.” His eyes lifted back to mine. “You feel it, don’t you?” My wolf stirred. Harder this time. A low, warning scrape inside my ribs. I straightened. “I feel nothing that concerns you.” A lie. A clean one. Because something in me had reacted the moment I stepped out here. Not submission. Not attraction. Recognition. And that scared me more than anything. Serenya’s voice came low, right behind me. “Kaelira… we should end this.” I ignored her. The Lycan took one slow step forward. The guards reacted instantly, blades drawn, tension snapping tight. “Stay where you are!” one of them barked. The Lycan didn’t even look at him. His attention stayed on me. Always me. “I didn’t come to fight your pack,” he said. “If I did, your gates would already be ash.” Silence dropped like a blade. No one challenged that. Because we all felt it. The weight of him. Different from an Alpha. It wasn’t controlled or measured. Raw. Dangerous. My wolf shifted again, restless. Not afraid. But at alert and watching. “Then say what you came to say and leave,” I said. My voice didn’t shake. I made sure of that. He studied me for a long moment. Then.. “You survived the binding.” My brows pulled slightly. “I didn’t survive anything. I ended it.” “Same thing,” he said. “No,” I replied quietly. “It isn’t.” Something flickered in his eyes. Approval? No. Recognition again. That word sat wrong in my chest. “Your kind usually breaks before they fight it,” he continued. “My kind?” I asked. “The ones with your blood.” The air tightened. Serenya shifted again. “Kaelira…” “I said I’ve heard enough,” I cut in. But my voice wasn’t as sharp this time. Because my wolf had gone still. Listening. “You don’t even know what you are,” he added. My fingers curled tighter. “Don’t pretend you do,” I shot back. A faint smirk touched his lips. “I know enough to recognize it.” My chest tightened. That pull again. Quick. Subtle. Like a thread brushing against skin and disappearing before I could grab it. I sucked in a breath quietly. No one noticed. Except him. His gaze sharpened. “There it is,” he murmured. Ice slid down my spine. I stepped forward before I could stop myself. Just one step. Closing the distance slightly. “You’re pushing your luck,” I said, my voice lower now. “Am I?” he asked calmly. “Yes.” He didn’t move. Didn’t retreat. Didn’t challenge. Just watched me. Like he was waiting for something. Or remembering something. My wolf shifted again, stronger this time. A faint pulse. Alive. It hadn’t felt like this in months. Not even when the bond snapped. This was different and I hated that it was because of him. I forced my shoulders back. “You came here talking about debts,” I said. “Say it clearly or leave my territory.” His expression changed slightly. Serious now and more. “Your bloodline was hunted,” he said. “Not destroyed. There’s a difference.” My throat tightened. “You’re wrong.” “I’m not.” “You weren’t there.” His jaw ticked slightly. “No,” he agreed. “But I saw what was left.” Silence, heavy, and Uncomfortable. My wolf stirred again, this time not just alert. Angry. Something about his words hit deeper than they should have. “You’re speaking in half-truths,” I said. “If you have something to say..” “They thought your line was extinct.” The words cut through everything. Even the wind seemed to pause. My breath slowed. “…What?” His gaze didn’t waver. “They made sure no one would ever look for you.” A chill settled in my bones. “That’s not your concern.” “It became my concern the moment I saw you.” That pull again. Stronger this time. A sharp flicker in my chest. My wolf reacted..quick, sudden. Not fear. Not submission. Awareness. I swallowed it down immediately. Locked it away. No one needed to see that. Especially not him. I stepped back. Creating distance again. “You’ve said enough,” I said, colder now. “You will leave.” For a moment, I thought he wouldn’t listen. Then he inclined his head slightly. “Not yet.” The guards tensed again. Serenya’s hand brushed my arm. A warning. But I didn’t move. Because I needed control. “I won’t repeat myself,” I said. He held my gaze for one last second. Then.. “I’ll return.” My stomach tightened. “You won’t be welcomed.” “I’m not here to be welcome.” A pause. Then, softer.. “I’m here because your bloodline wasn’t meant to survive.” Something in my chest twisted. He turned. Just like that. And walked away. No rush. No fear. Like he knew we wouldn’t stop him. And he was right. No one moved. No one spoke. We just watched him disappear into the trees. Only when he was completely gone did I release the breath I’d been holding. Serenya grabbed my arm. “What was that?” I shook my head. “I don’t know.” But that wasn’t true. I felt something. Something I didn’t understand. And I wasn’t ready to say it out loud. Maelin stepped closer, eyes sharp. “He wasn’t lying.” “I didn’t say he was.” “You reacted,” she added quietly. I met her gaze. Cold. Careful. “Did I?” She didn’t answer. Good. “Let’s go back,” I said. My legs felt heavier now. Not weak. Just… aware. The absence of the bond was still there. But something else had taken its place. Something quiet. Watching. ****** That night, sleep didn’t come easy. When it did…It wasn’t peaceful. Fire. Everywhere. The smell hit first, burning wood, burning flesh, smoke thick enough to choke. I was standing in the middle of it. No. Not standing. Watching. A village burned around me. Crescent symbols carved into doors… shattered. Bodies.. Too many. My chest tightened. This wasn’t a story. This wasn’t imagination. This felt real. A scream echoed somewhere in the distance. My wolf stirred violently. Then, Movement. At the edge of the flames. A figure, small, still…watching me A boy. His eyes locked onto mine through the fire. Unblinking. Knowing. My breath caught. He didn’t move. Didn’t run. Just stood there…Like he had been waiting. For me. The fire surged higher. Swallowing everything. And just before everything went dark, He took one step forward. And whispered something I couldn’t hear.
