1: The Moon’s Mark

515 Words
The night of my eighteenth birthday was supposed to be ordinary. A bonfire. A few pack friends. A celebration of adulthood and the awakening of my wolf. But the moment the moonlight hit me, everything changed. The marking ceremony was being held at the center of the Moonstone Pack grounds. The air shimmered with anticipation and magic — every young wolf gathered, waiting to feel the spark that revealed their mate. It was meant to be beautiful, but for me, it felt like a storm brewing. “Relax, Selene,” my best friend Maya whispered, bumping my shoulder playfully. “You’re shaking like a rabbit.” I smiled weakly, but my heart was pounding too fast. I’d dreamed of finding my mate since I was a little girl, but deep down, I’d always felt… different. There was something about me that never quite fit — an energy that made other wolves uneasy, even the elders. The Alpha brothers stood at the front of the gathering. Damon and Darius Blackwood — identical twins, yet complete opposites. Damon, the older twin, was the perfect Alpha: composed, powerful, his golden eyes steady and commanding. His aura burned like sunlight — warm, confident, and impossible to ignore. Darius, the younger, was the opposite — his dark hair always slightly messy, his eyes sharp and stormy gray. There was a wildness in him, a danger that made people step back when he smiled. And as fate would have it… both of them were watching me. “Selene Ashford,” Alpha Damon called, his voice deep and steady. “Step forward.” A murmur ran through the crowd. My stomach twisted. Why was the Alpha calling me? I wasn’t anyone important — just a healer’s daughter. I stepped closer, my bare feet brushing the cool grass. Then it happened. The air around me crackled. A surge of power tore through my chest, and I gasped. The moon above us turned crimson for a heartbeat, and the ground trembled. My wolf, who had been silent all my life, howled inside me for the first time. And then… both Damon and Darius dropped to their knees. The crowd gasped. I stood frozen as their wolves glowed beneath their skin — golden light for Damon, silver shadows for Darius — and their eyes locked onto mine. Two voices spoke in unison, deep and raw, sending shivers down my spine. “Mate.” The entire pack erupted into chaos. It wasn’t possible. No wolf could have two mates. The Moon Goddess never made such mistakes. I stumbled back, shaking my head. “No… no, that can’t be—” Darius’s hand caught my wrist, his touch searing hot. “It’s real, Selene. You’re ours.” Damon’s hand followed, firm and unyielding as his gaze met his brother’s. “No. She’s mine.” The power between them clashed like lightning, splitting the air. Wolves shifted in panic around us. My heart raced so violently it hurt. And beneath the chaos, one truth sank into me like ice: The Moon Goddess hadn’t blessed me. She’d cursed me.
