5: The Seer’s Warning

743 Words
The forest was cloaked in silver mist when we set out at dawn. Damon led the way through the narrow trail, his steps sure and silent. Darius followed behind me, every movement tense, his aura dark and watchful. I walked between them — the unwilling bridge between two forces of nature. The bond pulsed faintly beneath my skin, guiding me forward like a thread of light. It pulled toward the mountains where the Seer lived — the woman said to speak for the Moon herself. No one dared break the silence. The night before still clung to us, heavy and fragile. I could feel Damon’s calm power brushing against my senses, steady as sunlight. Darius’s presence was a storm beside it — restless, unpredictable, burning too close. When we finally reached the stone archway that marked the Seer’s dwelling, I felt the air shift. The forest itself seemed to breathe differently. Ancient energy hummed in the roots and branches, awakening at our arrival. “She’s expecting us,” Damon murmured. Darius gave a low grunt. “She’d better have answers.” Inside, the Seer’s cave glowed with pale light. Crystals lined the walls, catching the glow of the rising sun. At the center, an old woman sat before a pool of still water. Her silver hair fell around her shoulders like moonlight, and her eyes… her eyes held the depth of centuries. “I see the Moon’s bond burns brighter than before,” she said without looking up. Her voice echoed softly, as if carried by the wind. I hesitated. “You knew this would happen?” The Seer nodded slowly. “The prophecy spoke of twins born under the red eclipse — one to lead with light, one with shadow. But the Moon, in her mercy, sent balance. You, child. The vessel of both their strength.” Darius stepped forward, impatience flickering in his eyes. “Then tell us how to break it.” Her gaze snapped to him — sharp, knowing. “You cannot break what was never meant to be undone.” The words hit like a stone in still water. Damon’s jaw tightened. “There must be a way. This bond… it’s changing her. Hurting her.” The Seer’s gaze softened as she looked at me. “It will only hurt if she resists it. The Moon’s mark awakens truth — and truth cannot be contained.” Her hand rose, and the surface of the pool rippled. Images shimmered to life — flashes of fire, of wolves fighting beneath a blood-red sky. I saw myself standing between Damon and Darius, light spilling from my hands as the world burned around us. “What is this?” I whispered. “The future that awaits if you fail to choose,” she said quietly. “The bond will consume all three of you unless it finds balance.” “Balance?” Darius scoffed. “She’s tied to both of us. How can there be balance in that?” The Seer’s eyes gleamed. “By learning to trust what binds you — not what divides you.” Her words made no sense and yet struck deep. I felt something stir inside me — a faint pulse of understanding, a whisper that this was more than destiny. It was choice. The Seer stood slowly, her gaze steady on mine. “Your awakening has only begun, Selene. The Moon has given you her gift — but power always comes with cost. When the next eclipse rises, you must decide which bond leads and which follows. If you delay…” Her voice faded as the crystals around us dimmed, shadows curling at the edges of the cave. The pool went still again, reflecting only the three of us — and in that reflection, I saw faint lines of silver connecting our hearts. The Seer’s voice came one last time, low and distant. “Two Alphas. One heart. Only balance will save the pack — or destroy it.” Outside, thunder rolled across the mountains though no storm had formed yet. Darius’s gaze met Damon’s, full of fire. Damon’s met mine — full of unspoken fear. The bond between us pulsed once, like a heartbeat that didn’t belong to any one of us alone. And deep inside, I realized the truth I didn’t want to face: The Moon hadn’t chosen me to love one Alpha. She’d chosen me to save — or doom — them both.
