CHAPTER 18: Before We Say Goodbye

254 Words
Years passed. The house on Willow Street became theirs. They painted the walls. Repaired the roof. Planted flowers. Built a small studio for Emma. Daniel kept an office upstairs. Their life wasn't perfect. Sometimes they argued. Sometimes they misunderstood each other. Sometimes one of them needed space. But they never disappeared. They talked. They stayed. They chose each other. One evening, Emma found Daniel on the roof. She sat beside him. "What are you thinking?" "About us." She smiled. "Again?" "Always." He looked at her. "Do you ever wonder what would have happened if I hadn't messaged you?" Emma thought about it. "Sometimes." "What do you think?" "I think I would have been okay." Daniel smiled sadly. "That's good." "But I don't think I would have been as happy." He took her hand. "Me neither." Emma looked at the city. "Do you regret anything?" "Eight years." She nodded. "Me too." "But I don't regret coming back." "Neither do I." They sat quietly. Then Emma smiled. "Do you remember the promise we made?" "Which one?" "Always." Daniel laughed. "I remember." "We thought it meant we'd never leave each other." "Now we know better." "What does it mean now?" Daniel looked at her. "It means that even when life takes us somewhere we didn't expect..." He squeezed her hand. "...we find our way back." Emma rested her head on his shoulder. "That's better than forever." "Why?" "Because forever sounds impossible." Daniel kissed her hair. "And choosing each other isn't?" "No." She smiled. "We've already done it."
