The next morning, Daniel drove Emma to the lake.
They had gone there once before.
The summer before he left.
They had sat on the grass and talked about their futures.
Now they were older.
The lake looked smaller.
Or perhaps they had simply grown.
They sat beneath a tree.
"Did you ever hate me?" Daniel asked.
Emma thought.
"Yes."
He nodded.
"I understand."
"I hated you because I thought you didn't care."
"I cared."
"I know."
Daniel looked at the water.
"I dated someone."
Emma looked at him.
"How serious?"
"Very."
"What happened?"
"I ended it."
"Why?"
"Because she deserved someone who wasn't still thinking about another person."
Emma swallowed.
"Did you tell her?"
"Yes."
"What did she say?"
"She told me to stop living in the past."
Emma smiled sadly.
"She was right."
"She was."
Daniel looked at her.
"That's why I'm here."
Emma's heart beat faster.
"To live in the past?"
"No."
He reached for her hand.
"To find out if there's still a future."
