That evening, Daniel walked Emma home.
They stood outside her apartment.
Neither wanted to leave.
"Thank you," Daniel said.
"For what?"
"For giving me these days."
Emma smiled.
"I haven't decided if I'm forgiving you yet."
"I'll take my chances."
She laughed.
Daniel stepped closer.
Emma's smile disappeared.
He looked at her.
"Emma."
"Yes?"
"I've wanted to do this for eight years."
He leaned closer.
She closed her eyes.
Their lips were almost touching.
Then Emma stepped back.
Daniel immediately stopped.
"I'm sorry."
"No."
"What?"
"I'm scared."
"Of me?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"Losing you again."
Daniel looked at her.
"You won't."
"You don't know that."
"You're right."
He took a breath.
"But I know I don't want to lose you."
Emma looked at him.
Neither spoke.
Finally, Daniel kissed her forehead.
"Good night, Em."
He walked away.
Emma watched him until he disappeared.
Then she touched her forehead.
She smiled.
For the first time in eight years.
