The airport was crowded.
Emma hated it.
Every announcement sounded like a countdown.
Daniel held her hand.
"I'll call tonight."
"Promise?"
"Promise."
"And tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow too."
"The next day?"
"Every day."
The boarding announcement came.
Daniel hugged her.
Emma held him tightly.
"I don't want to let go."
"Neither do I."
"You'll come back?"
"I'll come back."
"Promise?"
He smiled.
"Always."
He kissed her forehead.
Then he walked toward the gate.
Emma watched until he disappeared.
Only then did she cry.
She stood alone for several minutes.
Then she looked at her phone.
A message appeared.
Daniel:
Look behind you.
Emma turned.
Daniel was standing several feet away.
He had returned.
She stared at him.
"What are you doing?"
"I forgot something."
"What?"
He walked toward her.
"You."
Emma laughed through her tears.
"You missed your flight."
"I know."
"Daniel!"
"I'll take the next one."
She shook her head.
"You can't keep doing this."
"I can."
He took her hand.
"I don't know what happens next."
"Neither do I."
"But I know I don't want to leave without trying."
Emma smiled.
"Then try."
He took her hand.
"I don't know what happens next."
"Neither do I."
"But I know I don't want to leave without trying."
Emma smiled.
"Then try."
