Daniel eventually left. But this time, it was different. There were phone calls. Video chats. Messages. Photographs. Plans. There were difficult days too. Days when their schedules didn't match. Days when Emma missed him so badly she couldn't sleep. Days when Daniel was exhausted from work. But neither disappeared. Neither stopped answering. Neither walked away. They learned how to love across distance. They learned patience. They learned communication. They learned that trust wasn't something you said. It was something you practiced. One evening, Emma called him after a terrible day. "I'm tired." Daniel looked at her through the screen. "I know." "I don't want to be strong today." "You don't have to." She started crying. Daniel stayed. He didn't try to fix it. He simply listened. When she finally stopped crying, he smiled. "Better?" "A little." "Good." "I miss you." "I miss you too." "Come home." "I will." "When?" "Eventually." She frowned. "I hate that word." "Why?" "It sounds like never." Daniel smiled. "Then I'll give you a date." "When?" "One year." Emma stared at him. "One year?" "My contract ends." "And then?" "Then I'm coming home." She smiled. "Promise?" "Promise." "Then I'm coming home." She smiled. "Promise?" "Promise." "Promise.
