CHAPTER 15: The Choice

220 Words
A year changed Emma. She opened her own design studio. She hired two employees. She became more confident. She stopped defining herself by what had happened to her. Daniel changed too. He turned down another overseas contract. His friends thought he was crazy. His career was thriving. But he had finally understood something. Success wasn't enough. A good life wasn't necessarily the same as a happy one. He wanted home. He wanted Emma. He wanted the ordinary things. Dinner together. Arguments over groceries. Sunday mornings. A shared apartment. A dog. Maybe children. Maybe a garden. Maybe nothing extraordinary at all. He wanted a life that felt real. One evening, Emma received a message. Daniel: Look outside. She went to the window. A car was parked across the street. Daniel stepped out. Emma froze. He looked up. Their eyes met. She ran downstairs. He caught her before she could say anything. She wrapped her arms around him. "You came home." "I told you." "You didn't tell me today." "I wanted to surprise you." She laughed against his shoulder. "I missed you." "I missed you more." They pulled apart. Daniel looked at her. "I have something to ask you." Emma's heart started beating faster. "What?" "Not tonight." She laughed. "Why?" "Because I want to do it properly." "Do what?" "You'll find out."
