CHAPTER 5: Into the shadows

332 Words
The night air was thick with tension as Emily and Lucas slipped through the narrow alley behind her apartment. Every sound echoed louder than usual the rustle of leaves, the distant hum of city lights, the soft thud of their footsteps on damp pavement. “Where are we going?” Emily asked, clutching the ancient letter tightly in her jacket pocket. “To someone who can help us,” Lucas replied without slowing down. “An old guardian. One of the last who remembers what your family once was.” Emily hesitated. “My family? You knew them?” Lucas stopped and turned to her. His voice softened. “I knew your mother. She was powerful, brave, and selfless. The fire in her blood runs in you now. And so does her burden.” A strange warmth bloomed in Emily’s chest, a mixture of pride and fear. She nodded, and they continued. They stopped in front of an old bookstore wedged between two buildings. Its windows were dusty, and a faded sign above read *“Ashwood Tales.”* The lights were off, but something glowed faintly inside. Lucas knocked in a rhythm three short taps, two long. The door creaked open to reveal an elderly woman with piercing eyes and silver hair braided down her back.“You’re late,” she said flatly, then looked at Emily. And you… you’re the flame reborn. Come. Inside, the shop smelled of old paper, candle wax, and something smoky. Ancient books filled every corner. She led them to a room hidden behind a sliding shelf. “You’ve been marked,” the woman said, touching a faint symbol glowing on Emily’s wrist. “The seal is strong… but raw. You’ve only just begun to awaken.” “What now?” Emily asked. The woman lit a crystal orb, and the room pulsed with energy. “Now,” she said, “you train. Because if you don’t control the fire… it will control you.”
