The wind howled outside as Lucas led Emily into the night. The streets were quiet, but the air felt charged like a storm waiting to break. She had so many questions, but her instincts told her to trust him, even if everything felt unreal.
They moved quickly through alleyways until they reached a hidden iron door beneath an old bookstore. Lucas pressed his palm against a small symbol carved into the wall. It glowed red and the door creaked open.
Inside was a candlelit chamber lined with ancient books, herbs, weapons, and strange artifacts. Emily stared, stunned. “What is this place?”
“A sanctuary,” Lucas said. “For those like you. Healers, protectors, and fire-bearers. Your mother once stood here too.”
“My mother?” Emily gasped. “She died when I was a baby.”
Lucas nodded. “She died protecting you. From the Shadow Guild. And now… they’ve sensed your awakening.”
Emily felt a pulse in her chest warmth spreading through her veins. Her hands trembled, and suddenly a flicker of flame danced across her fingertips. She yelped and pulled back.
“You’re unlocking fast,” Lucas said, eyes wide. “Too fast.”
Emily looked at her hands. “What’s happening to me?”
“You’re becoming what you were born to be,” he said quietly. “But if we don’t train you in time, that power could consume you or worse, be taken.”
Emily took a deep breath. Her life would never be the same.
But maybe… it was never meant to be ordinary.
