CHAPTER 7: Marked by fire

280 Words
Emily sat alone by the fireplace, the orange glow flickering across her face. Her fingers absentmindedly traced the strange symbol that had begun to appear just below her collarbone fiery and warm to the touch. It hadn't been there days ago, but now it pulsed like it had a life of its own. Kael watched her from across the room, his arms crossed but his expression soft. “That mark,” he finally said, “means your powers are waking up. You're becoming what you were born to be.” She turned to him slowly. “I didn’t ask for this. I was just a nurse. I wanted a normal life.” “You were never meant to be normal,” Kael said, stepping closer. “That mark is the sign of the Emberblood. It chooses only one every generation. And now, it’s you.” Emily’s mind swirled with fear and curiosity. “Why me? What am I supposed to do with this?” Kael knelt beside her, his voice gentle. “Learn to control it… before it controls you.” Outside, the wind howled as if echoing the turmoil within her. She could feel heat building in her hands again uncontrolled, unpredictable. The mug beside her cracked from the pressure of her energy. She gasped and pulled her hands back. “See?” she whispered. “I’m dangerous.” “You’re powerful,” Kael corrected. “And power, when guided, becomes strength.” Emily looked into his eyes, searching for certainty. All she saw was fire his and hers dancing in the shadows. Whether she liked it or not, her destiny was calling. And it was only getting hotter.
