"What do you think, Drake, old buddy?" Kyle murmured, running a hand through his disheveled hair. The adrenaline of the chase and the shock of Sasha's pronouncement were slowly giving way to a more thoughtful consideration of their next move. "Do we leave her be for tonight? Come back tomorrow… in human form?"
Drake, in his wolf form, nudged Kyle's hand with his large head, a low rumble in his chest. She's scared, Kyle. Confused. Pushing too fast might spook her more.
Kyle nodded in agreement. "You're right. Subtlety might be our best approach. But how do we introduce ourselves? 'Hey, we're the werewolves who live in the woods, and apparently, you're our mate'?" He chuckled humorlessly. "Somehow, I don't think that'll go over well."
He paused, considering. "She'll definitely smell our scent if we get too close. No point in trying to lie about why we're there. Maybe… maybe we start with an explanation. A carefully worded one. About the changes she's going through. About… others like her." He avoided the word "werewolf" for now. It felt too loaded, too potentially frightening.
He started walking towards the edge of their territory, Drake loping silently beside him. The image of the fierce, beautiful gray and white wolf, and the memory of Sasha's bold declaration, kept playing in his mind.
"Heading back to the pack," Kyle said, a smile still playing on his lips. "Mate," he repeated the word softly, a sense of wonder mixing with the anticipation. "Drake, ole boy, we have got one hell of a story to tell Beta Liam when we get home." He could already picture Liam's raised eyebrows, the mixture of disbelief and intrigue that would cross his face. This was going to change everything. The discovery of a new member of their lineage, especially one with such a unique and powerful wolf, was significant. And the mate bond… that was a whole other level of complication, and potential. As they disappeared into the deeper shadows of the forest, Kyle's smile widened. The quiet life he had known was officially over.
Kyle stepped into the familiar warmth of the pack house, the scent of pine and damp dog fur a comforting aroma after the night's bewildering events. Liam, their Beta, was in the kitchen, the clinking of a ceramic mug against the coffeepot a familiar morning sound.
Liam yawned, stretching his arms high above his head, his spine cracking with a satisfying pop. Leaning back against the counter, he finally noticed Kyle standing in the doorway. "Hey, man. What's up? Where've you been? Didn't see you at the evening patrol."
A wide, almost giddy smile spread across Kyle's face. "Liam, my friend, I have the most incredible tale to tell you. And trust me, you are not going to believe it."
Through Kyle's eyes, Drake's mental smirk was palpable. Nope. He sure isn't.
Liam, two steaming mugs in hand, turned towards the kitchen table. "Alright, spill it. Rough night on the border?"
"Wait," Kyle interjected, his voice dropping slightly. "This is… kinda a secret. And probably best to take this conversation somewhere private. You know, in case someone walks in." He gestured vaguely towards the living area.
Liam frowned, a knot of unease tightening in his stomach. Kyle's secretive tone was unusual. "Kyle, is it that serious? Trouble?"
"No, no trouble. No threat of any kind, I promise," Kyle reassured him quickly. "Just… this is private. And you are absolutely not going to believe the night I just had." He gestured again towards the living room, his eagerness barely contained. "Come on. Coffee first, then you need to hear this."
Liam took a slow sip of his coffee, his eyes fixed on Kyle. He listened intently as Kyle recounted the strange encounter in the Blackwood Forest: the unexpected transformation of the young girl, Juniper; her unique and beautiful wolf form; and the bizarre, almost playful interaction between her wolf, Sasha, and Drake. He listened, his initial skepticism slowly giving way to a bewildered fascination.
Then came the part about Sasha’s pronouncement. Kyle’s voice dropped slightly as he repeated the word, “Mate.” He then described Juniper’s sudden flight back to the cottage, leaving them both in stunned silence.
As Kyle finished his tale, he leaned back in his chair, his gaze fixed on Liam, a mixture of excitement and nervous anticipation in his eyes. He watched as Liam slowly lowered his coffee mug to the table, his expression unreadable. The silence in the room stretched, punctuated only by the gentle ticking of the grandfather clock in the hallway. Kyle could practically hear the gears turning in Liam’s mind as he processed the unbelievable information.
Finally, Liam broke the silence, his voice low and thoughtful. “Mate?” He repeated the word, a hint of disbelief still lingering in his tone. He rubbed a hand across his jaw, his brow furrowed in contemplation. “A human girl… who just turned eighteen… transforms into a wolf… and her wolf… called you… mate?” He looked directly at Kyle, his eyes searching for any sign of a prank. “Are you sure you weren’t sampling some of Old Man Hemlock’s… special… forest herbs last night, Kyle?”
"I am positive. Here, let me show you. This is her in human form: . And this is her in wolf form; have you ever seen such beauty and grace?: . I couldn't stop watching the way she played and enjoyed everything. It was so exciting I couldn't contain my wolf and desire to join the fun."
Liam stared at the images, his initial skepticism fading with each passing second. The human Juniper was striking, with a delicate beauty that hinted at a hidden strength. But the wolf… the wolf was breathtaking. The unique coloration, the swirling grays, whites, and blacks, created a creature of ethereal beauty and raw power.
"She's… extraordinary," Liam breathed, his voice filled with a mixture of awe and disbelief. He looked back at Kyle, a new understanding dawning in his eyes. "And you said… she called you mate?"
Kyle ran a hand through his hair, a restless energy still thrumming beneath his skin. "Yes," he confirmed, a grin splitting his face. "I am still completely hyped up on adrenaline. I should probably go to bed, try to get some rest before training later, but… I honestly don't think it's going to happen." He gestured vaguely with his hands, trying to convey the sheer excitement of the night. "My mind is racing. Sasha… Juniper… her wolf… calling me mate. It's… a lot to process." He chuckled, a nervous, almost giddy sound. "Sleep feels like a distant dream right now."
