Unraveling the Past

1014 Words
Elena stood at the edge of a rooftop, looking at the sprawling city, now visible through a blur of lights and shadows below her. Rafe had brought her here after his meeting with the council-the supernatural assembly that had, for reasons yet fully known to Elena, decided to take her under their wing. The wind pulled at her hair, and she tightened her jacket around her shoulders, trying to shake off the unease that clung so heavily to her. It had been hours after leaving the underworld meeting, but Elena's mind still spun. She had learned so much in the last twenty-four hours: certainly more than her whole life had to offer her-the questions still multiplied. Questions from her heritage, questions regarding the ancient forces hunting her down, and questions regarding the strange new power now thrumming underneath her skin, waiting to be unleashed. "Is it always like this?" Elena asked, her voice somehow breaking the silence between the two. She flashed a glance at Rafe, who stood just a few feet away, his back toward her while he gazed at the city below. His expression was unreadable, his dark eyes shadowy from the night. "You know, the city. Full of secrets." Rafe didn't immediately say anything. He just nodded, his eyes flickering to the moon above for a quick second. The blood moon had long since set on the horizon, but the memory of it still clings to the air, heavy and oppressive. "This has always been a city full of secrets," Rafe finally spoke. "The supernatural world has been hidden from humans for centuries. We live in shadows, out of sight and fight our wars without commotion. But that's changing. The balance is shifting, and that's why you are here, now." Elena frowned. "What balance? I still don't understand why I'm so important. I didn't ask for any of this." Rafe's eyes softened for the briefest moment but did not bring him an inch closer. "Neither of us asked for it. But the bloodline you carry... it has powers beyond what you think. It's the key to everything that's coming." The next beat of Elena's heart skipped at his words. "The key to what?" He hesitated, jaw tight. "The key to stopping the war that's coming. The one that could destroy both the human world and the supernatural world." Elena took a step back, her mind swirling. "A war? What war? Who's going to start it?" Rafe turned to face her squarely, eyes dark with something she couldn't place. "The war is already here. The ones who will start it... they're already watching you." An involuntary shiver passed down Elena's spine. She did not even know who or what he was talking about, but she could feel the weight of his words. Deep inside, she knew that whatever was coming, whatever danger she was about to face, would be far worse than whatever she had imagined. "But I still don't understand," Elena said, raising her voice in frustration. "What am I supposed to do? I'm just a-" "A werewolf," Rafe finished for her. "You're not just anything, Elena. You're part of something much bigger. You've got a power in you that's been lying dormant for years, and now it's waking up. It's a gift... and a curse." Elena bit her lip, her mind churning. She had never felt strong-willed or special. Just a normal person who got swept into a world where chaos and exterior danger are the usual case for living. Overwhelming weight lightened her new reality. "Why me?" she whispered, tears welling up in her eyes. "Why did it have to be me?" Upon his face, Rafe wore an unyielding expression. "Because, Elena, your bloodline is ancient. Your family has ties to the supernatural world that go back centuries, and not just any family. You're tied to one of the oldest and most powerful werewolf clans that ever existed. The very same clan that set up the system of balance that all of us now live by." The words hung in the air thick and heavy, and Elena felt as if the earth were shifting under her. The entirety of her life had proven to be a lie. She was not merely an ordinary female. She dared be a major player, embroiled in a war she did not understand. "Your ancestors made an oath to protect the balance," Rafe continued, his voice steady. "And now that balance is endangering itself. There are those who want to break it. And you, Elena, are the one who can stop them." "But I don't know how," she said, the confusion evident in her voice." I don't even know what I'm supposed to do." Rafe, at long last, moved in closer, his gaze softening ever so barely. "And that is why I am here. To help you. To show you how to unlock your potential. How to control your powers." Elena searched Rafe's face for any signs of doubt or reservation, but the only thing she found there was resolved determination. And something else, something deeper than that. She was unsure what it was, but it felt that there was a connection between them-a bond forged in something unspoken, something shared. And as much as she felt an urge to deny it, she could not ignore how it made her feel. "Iya", she uttered lowly, "are you sure you can teach me?" Rafe did not hesitate. "I'll do whatever it takes." Silence hung between them before the cities stretched themselves in sprawling vastness before them. Elena inhaled sharply, busying herself as it blew all the storms in her. She was unsure whether she really was able to deal with all of this. She wasn't sure whether she was strong enough to face what worried her. But of one thing, she was quite sure: she couldn't turn back now. "And what now?" Elena pressed in a whisper that immediately became iron in steel. A small grim smile tugged at Rafe's lips. "We begin your training. And we prepare for the war that has already started."
