I smiled when I leaned over to give her a kiss on the cheek, pulling back I watch as we passed a few buildings. I could see from the corner of my eyes the scowl on my mothers face and the way she bit her lip and the way she frowned that something wasn't right, there was definitely something going on in the pack's mind link because through my block I've felt there major hits against my mind wall trying to get to me.
"Darling I'm just scared..." she whispered, leaning forward to turn off the music that I didn't even know was playing.
"Don't be, you lost dad..." I spoke out, not daring to look at my mother now.
Even through my voice sounded firmer than I expected it to be, it's one thing for me to lose myself and my chosen mate and another to lose a bonded mate I believe. My respect for my mother has only grown so much more from that fateful day that I watched her break down completely,I watched as she made the choice to pull herself together and take care of her child that was feeling so lost for the first time. Thinking that I could never really remember my mother showing any symptoms for her lost but it can also be because it was never rejection, he died, maybe there was a difference in the way that your wolf feels the lost of her partner even through the elders had taught us that once your partner had died that you would fallow shortly. In a way I believe it's sort of blessing than becoming a creäture that the humans tell stories about, a dreadful creäture on two legs that changes under a full moon. Those are the creatures that hunters dream of catching, not even rogues dream of crossing their paths. Even they are somewhat legends to us, a story told to keep you in bed at night for fear that they might search for your soul to make it theirs. I stared at my mother's reflection in the window, watching her face cringe as she tried to control her emotions. Now that I think about it, does she struggle to control her wolf from taking over completely?
"It's different Alphine!" the growl that left my mother's lips made me wince, never in my eighteen years has she ever growled at me like that.
"It is kind of. But don't worry, we'll be alright." I smiled again, hoping to stop the argument from getting out of control before it even started.
"We will need to pack and leave, I hope that your Aunt still has that cottage..."
"No mom, you need to stay." I whispered, watching her reaction closely.
"And what will you do? Do you really think that I will leave you to wonder on your own?" she growled, bearing her fangs at me.
"We don't have a choice mom, I need to dissapear with my baby." I smiled sadly as I watch her look at me in shock, then she looked at my stomach.
There was nothing else said on the ride to our house, we were both lost in thought and I knew that my mom was trying to find a way to leave with me. I made sure that there was no one trying to get ahold of me through the link before I let it down softly and listened the pack talk about the soon to be Alpha's condition, I also tride to see if it would be save for my mom to stay behind. If I didn't say those dreadful words first, it would have been me lying in the bed with his condition, it isn't as if he wouldn't have hurt me further than I had.
The car came to a stop in front of our house, pain shot through my heart at the thought of never seeing it again and loosing everything that I have had through the years. I made a promise in my heart that one day I will come back when all is well and this incident has been forgotten. I moved fast up towards my room and started getting out my all of my bags, packing everything in that I owned and what could fit. The presence of my mother made me look over my shoulder at her staring at me with fear in her eyes, she opened her mouth as if to say something then closed it again. She knew that no advice would let me take her with me so she walked in and started helping me pack, after what seemed like everything was packed in, we carried the bags to my white beetle under the tree at the back of the house. I smiled when my mom came out holding a pink lunchbox, with tears running down my face I thanked her for everything she did in my life. We held on tight to each other not wanting to let go, I kissed her cheek and rubbed her back as I bit my lip to stop the sob from escaping. She knew without saying a word that communication between us would be scarce, I needed to find my way and leaving her behind just pained me more. Failing I let out a sob as I pulled back, she placed her palm on my cheek. Placing my head against her I wish so much that I could find another way to fix this, maybe find a way to travel back in time and stop us from ever meeting at that stupid party.
"Take care of yourself, my baby girl, you'll see soon we'll be reunited again. Promise me that you will take care of both of you." the sobs in her voice made my throat constrict together, I stared at the small smile on her lips.
"I...I promise mamma." I whispered, hoping with all my heart that she was right.
Kissing her for the last time I pulled out of her arms and I got into my car, reversed into the forest of the great Smokey Mountains. I waved as I left my mum standing at the edge of the forest, driving around the house I made my way onto the road that may lead to my freedom. As I drove towards the end of the town houses I can't help but recall my mother telling me that after a human once stumbled upon this abandoned town he couldn't stop telling everyone he knew and by chance the word got to our Alpha that time, our pack had decided to make it our territory because it had been so well hidden from the humans and it was the safest place to race a new pack from the start. There was a lot of construction and renovations that had to be done, some of the houses still needed some touch-ups but no one ever gave up. Everyone started calling it Tennesee Wonderland after a some time had passed, but the Alpha changed it to Elkmont Creek later in the years.
Just as I neared the exit that leads to Elkmont camping ground howls of wolves erupted through the air that send shivers down my spine, grinding my teeth I took a deep breath getting ready for the pain that will come at the mind link that will be broken. That connection that bonded me to my pack started tearing at the edge of my mind, making it harder for me to control my wolfs that was lashing out at me. The talks and calls became from everyone became softer while that stupid headache only became louder, even my wolf started my further to the back of my mind. I pressed the car to drive faster, ignoring the nausea and dizziness that wanted to blind me. Even through my connection with my wolf was on a breaking point, I will felt how she started feeling on edge as we started passing by human campers. No one has heard of a wolf leaving their pack or mate behind and she didn't want to be the first one to do it. I snorted at her feeling of betrayal she pushed through towards me, and I couldn't help but remind her that he chose to leave us behind easily so I can just as easily pick up my stuff and leave.
Why would he care where I'm going, no one does in any case?
Except for my mother. As I watch the national park disappear in the background I finally started relaxing, my wolf got even more quiet as she settled down. In a way I can understand why she would be confused, but the feeling of her being scared didn't make sense. I still remember the first time I found her and the way she looked at me, I couldn't help but think that she must have been the strongest and brafest wolf I have ever met. I was so relieved when she had picked me because I knew that I would have a friend for life and she had carried me through so much pain, it looks like I'll need to be the stronger one of us two because I will need to keep her at bay if we will be bringing this pup into the world. I smiled for the first time when I saw a sign proclaiming that McGhee Tyson Airport is a few miles ahead, when I drove into Maryville I kept my eyes on the road even through I needed sleep badly. I ignored the stares from every single human that looked at my beat down car and reminded myself that there was no time to waste, once I finally got a parking spot at the airport I started pulling out my bags. I gave the car keyrs to some random guy that I found waiting for a taxi to pick him up, I made my way to the reception which also took a while to find a flight to Tuba City but at least they finally found a last cancellation and booked me the flight. The flight was quiet on the small airplane; some humans were busy on their laptops where others were working on their IPad. Closing my eyes, I tried catching up on sleep when a few hours later I got woken up by the announcement that we should get ready to land. Security checking went by fast, leaving me with plenty of time searching for people who I could hitch ride with. I finally got a ride to Phoenix with a family of five, the van on road was filled with laughter and jokes. Now and then there was screaming but mostly the conversation between me and the parents was casual when they dropped me off at a gas station where I waited patiently for another ride, I was sitting on one of my bags while eating a chocolate bar when a blue fainted Chevy pulled off just meters of the road ahead. A middle age man climbed out of the car, the light grey in his hair got swept up by the wind which he pulled back into a hat. His leather jacket looked like it had Mexican stitching on his shoulder and his blue jeans and brown boots are covered in dust, it made him look worn down. When he stopped next to me I notice his once caramel skin took on a darker tint with the sun, but it's those clear sky blue eyes that stared at me with interest that somehow scared me.
"You are not from around here child?" his deep crabby voice sounded more accusing than friendly, sow I couldn't help looking down and staring at my almost pale skin.
Do I really stand out that much?
"No, sir." even in the silence I could hear my voice sounded dead to me, and I fear that I'm already losing the battle I'm trying so hard to win.
"What is a fragile thing like you doing here?" his voice took on a softer tone, hunching down he looked me in the eyes.
"I'm searching for a safe place to lay down roots sir, a place to start over." I didn't even try to say that I never wanted to be found, hopefully, this man can read between the lines.
"Alright young one, I know just the place." he sounded concerned but he still helped me up without a word, which I really appreciated.
We didn't talk much as he drove, well I didn't say much but he was like a radio. While the music of some band played on the radio he talked about a town called Swansea, I didn't want to tell him that the name reminded me about a ghost town I once read about. Maybe they had also build a new town and decided to name it after that the forgotten town, I can't really judge because our Alpha chose a forgotten town to start a life in. He kept on driving further into the desert that made me feel more nervous, we are far from any kind of town to call for help if this car broke down or even for me to find a way to escape if need be. The change of atmosphere made me want to open the door and hurl, I didn't even realise he was payin attention to me untill he pulled over to the side fast. Making his way to my door he helped me out, holding my hair out of my face when I started throwing up. Standing up I felt his hands on my shoulder keeping me balanced, after a couple of calming breaths he helped me back into the car. Taking out a bag from the back he pulled out a bottle of water, with a smile and a soft thank you I started drinking. He stroked away the hair from my face, the back of his hand touching my burning head.
"Child, are you sick?" he whispered looking at me from head to toe, shaking my head I assured him I'm alright.
The unease didn't leave me when he started driving again, opening the window I caught a sent in the night wind. The faint light started shining in the distance announcing a town nearby, the chances that a werewolf pack resides started scaring me. No pack will allow a rogue to enter their territory, they'll kill you on sight. It's even stranger how a pack of wolf's can live in the desert, I never really thought that it would be possible. There is not enough food to sustain a pack, even if they were the werewolf's they needed a place to change out of sight to assure our secret was safe. One thing that made sense was that there wouldn't be any war over territory, because who would live in a dessert? Leaning forward I turned the radio a little louder, turning my mind off to assure that any of their pack members couldn't sense me coming. Yawning after a while I caught sight of a gas station on the left side, when he turned in to fill the car up, I climbed out to stretch my legs. Smiling at an elderly man coming out of the shop, he walked towards the man smiling. They talked a few times before the man handed me money, walking into the shop I scanned the shelves. Taking a bag of chips and a salad I grabbed two glasses of water from the small fridge on the counter, the old man came back in and started writing up the items before giving me back small coins.
"I got us some food and water." I smiled handing him the chips and water.
"Thank you, child it will only be a few more miles until we reach the town." he patted my head before waving to the old man.
Right after we got on the road I felt a knock on my head. The force with what it came made my body lunge forward, hitting my head on the front window. The car came to a stop and hands pulled me back with care, I kept whispering sorry to the man while rubbing my head. Climbing out I couldn't help shivering as my body shook with fear, my hands flew to my stomach as if to be sure the baby is still alright. After a minute when my hearing came back I heard the soft heartbeat, groaning I leaned against the car rubbing my head. The soft leather that is placed around my shoulders gave me little warmth, pulling the jacket closer I got pulled into a hard chest.
"Child, are you expecting?" the fatherly sound in his voice made tears burn my eyes, pushing my head into his chest I nodded.
I begged him not to ask any questions in my mind. He didn't say anything, he just kept on rubbing my back until I calmed down, the rest of the ride kept me wondering who had so much power to knock the living daylights out of me. Grabbing my bottle of water, I drank slowly as I watch the sunrise from the mountains. It felt like a lifetime until I saw the small town, I turned to see the man a smile from ear to ear. He looked like someone finally coming home from a long journey, smiling I started rubbing my belly softly.
"I'll drop you off at a motel, they have the best food in town." he sounded more awake than I felt driving for days without rest or maybe it's my child draining my energy, I nodded as he kept on talking about this motel.
Every person stopped to stare at the car or rather me inside it, some waved at the man next to me while other just frowned. He pulled in front of a house with a wooden porch, on the side stood a sign that had a wolf howling at a moon engraved. Next to the figure stood Howl Motel, the irony made a small smile grow on my lips. The house is three stories high from the outside, every floor had double windows which indicated a room, it was only the top floor that held the balcony. Climbing out I followed to the back of the car, helping him take out my bags. We didn't say much as he helped me carry the bags into the house, the reception area was a small room that held a single the door to the stairs. On the right side, they placed leather couches along the wall making it look like one enormous couch, in the two corners of the room stood small trees arranged at different heights. Nothing covered the wooden floor except for a small play den. A black marble coffee table held different magazines arranged neatly around a branch that held different small aloe plants. Placing the bags down I followed him to the counter to find a spacious room, everything clean and in order. Blocks are carved into the back wall; each block had a drawer with a number printed on. On the right side near the door stood a filing cabinet, the left side held a table with a coffee machine. Different coffees arranged next to it in a basket with mugs placed neatly next to each other in three rows, a computer and necessary desk stationary placed just behind a computer with the chair empty. When the man cleared his throat the door opened, a girl came walking in with ruby-red painted lips. Her blond curls are held up in a messy bun with a pen in her hand, she's dressed in a plain silk dress shirt and black pencil skirt. The large black high heels gave her small figure more height than what is necessary, I couldn't find any makeup on her copper skin.
"Good Morning Mike, how was the drop off at Phoenix?" her light soft voice asked, black eyes curiously skipping between me and Mike.
"No hassle Luciel, I just picked up this child on the way here. She needs a few nights' rests to figure out where to go, got any rooms open?" he looked at me with that concern again before pulling out the wallet, my blood ran cold when I remembered I forgot my cards at home.
"Let me have a quick look for you." her smile grew showing off small pearl white teeth, sitting down in front of the computer she started typing away.
"I'll take care for your stay here." he assured me before taking out a few notes.
"You don't have to do that; you already did so much for us." I mumbled staring at him, he just gave me a small smile.
"Do you have enough money for your stay here?" he lifted up one eyebrow as to confirm is a question.
My silence answered his question when I looked away, not wanting to lie to the person that did all he could to get me here. I wanted to start cringing away from the humiliation, I still can't believe they are lying on the dressing table.
"We have a room open at floor three." Luciel spoke up just as he handed me the money.
"That will be alright..." he gave her the credit card before turning to me, handing me a piece of paper "...if you need anything at all give me a call, I'll be here in a jiffy. Good luck." with the last smile, he patted my head before walking out of the door.
Shivering I took the key she held out before grabbing my bags and following her through the door. She led me to an elevator, silence following us until she handed me the key to the door.
"The rules are on the paper on the table with our number, breakfast starts at seven and dinner at eight. If you need anything give us a call, it's a silent month so there won't be any children running around."
She nodded her head before walking back to the elevator, waving as the doors closed. Heaving out a breath I opened the door, taking my time to bring in my bags before locking the door again. Placing the key on the paper I walked to the glass doors, pulling all four locks I walked out. Leaving the curtains closed for some privacy, the wind felt cool against the burning sun. Walking to the railing I stared over the town, watching everyone go on with their daily routine. Mothers walked with their children in hand, a baker driving with a bicycle with bread in the basket. Policemen could be seen walking down just looking around, one or two cars drove past creating a stir between the silent chatter. There are trees planted here and there, creating shade for a group to sit down and enjoy a glass of ice-cold drinks. All in all, it seemed like a normal town, except for the nagging feeling that I'm going to get caught by an Alpha. I needed to leave as soon as possible, find a human town and settle down. With a slow movement, I headed back when a knock sounded through the room, closing the glass doors I made sure it's locked before I heading to the door. Keeping the chain on I unlocked the door, opening it just a smudge to find a man standing outside. His red hair is pulled back for everyone to see the emerald eyes, there's no emotion on his face, and his shoulders are pulled back showing off a broad chest. He's dressed in a white shirt and black pants and no shoes, he's the first person with a white pinkish skin tone. Those green eyes suddenly looked down at me, humor moving so fast through them that I thought me might have imagined it.
"The Alpha demands to see you right this instance." his raspy voice made it sound like he might be out of breath.
"Tell the Alpha I mean no harm, I'm only passing through." my voice sounded colder when I spoke, my eyes pleaded with him to understand.
"If you do not fallow me this instant rogue, we will kill you." he never even blinked when he spoke down to me, flinching I closed the door.
Looking back at the room I touched my stomach, sending a silent prayer before opening the door, standing up fully I still needed to lift my head to look him in the eyes. Just before following him I ran back in just to grab my keys, a firm hand wrapped around my arm, turning around I showed him the keys. We left with him pulling me by the arm towards a black Cadillac. The back door opened when the man shoved me in, the door slammed shut and the driver took off in a hurry. Swallowing I started playing with my fingers, watching every passing person. They drove to the center of town where a modern house stood, large enough to house twenty people. They brought the car to a stop next to the entrance of the driveway, the door opened to let the bright light of outside into the dark car.
Climbing out I followed emerald eyes into the house, not looking around the house until we reached two large wooden doors. He motioned for me to step inside after checking in, taking a deep breath, I walked into the cold room. Jumping when the door closed, the room didn't need a lightbulb for the entire back wall is done in windows. The left side of the wall held a bookcase with trophies and antiques, on the right side, stood a small living area. In front of me stood a huge wooden desk with an antique reading lamp. The man behind the desk stood up, walking around to cut off my view to his working area, he should be in his early the thirties. Short black hair and black eyes made him look worse than what I expect him to be, his lips are set in a firm line.
"You have entered my territory without being approved, give me one valid reason not to destroy you rogue." that alpha tone erupted causing the walls to shake.
Why on earth is he demanding an answer when my fate has already been decided as soon as I left me packs boundaries?
"I'm in search of a new life for me and my soon to be a pup." I spoke out, it's true I want to start over.
I want to see my baby grow up and meet her or his mate, get married and grow sort of old together even if I can't. I want to give her or him a normal life, one filled with love and compassion.
"Why here?" he walked closer until we stood nose to nose, now how do I answer that without sounding so pathetic?
"I got a ride to here, they said that the motel is the best and dropped me off." I mumbled looking past him to the outside, hoping that he wouldn't demand the rest of the truth.
"Seeing as you are expecting, is your mate dead?"
"No, he is..."
"Then leave now" he growled, his body shaking in anger.
"Please alpha I'm begging you, I can't go back there." I whimpered closing my arms around my belly, hoping that he would give me a pass into his pack.
"He'll come and search for you, if he finds you here it will mean war." he kept staring out of the window as if trying to see something that's not there.
"He won't search for me sir" I stated, biting my lip.
"How sure are you of that?"
"He is going to marry our alphas daughter!" I couldn't help but scream, my body shaking out of my control.
The realization finally hit me, sending me falling down when a pair of arms wrapped around me pulling me into a hard chest. I just started crying as this person tried soothing me, telling all kinds of words to calm me down. It took a while but I could finally straighten up, I looked back into those dark eyes.
Do they think I'm weak for breaking down?
I just shook my head when he opened his mouth, understanding somehow what I was going through. After an hour of him explaining everything about the pack he gave me passage, the conversation turned to where he explained to me that no other wolf had ever changed packs before and he does not know what the effect will be on me or the pup. Maybe no other wolf went through the same thing as I did, on the way back to the motel a sense of longing started growing in my heart.
I looked out of the window hoping that my wolf will grow used to being alone as I am. Climbing out I headed back up into my room, looking at the clock I decided to skip dinner and just unpack. Luciel brought dinner to me, giving me a sad smile before heading back down. After I've finished my lunch I finished getting ready for bed, dressing in sweatpants and a tank top. Climbing into bed the sudden kick of my pup made me chuckle, I poured cream into my hand and started rubbing my stomach.
"Well my little angel, this will be our new start. You'll be happy here, that I'm sure of. My first promise is that I'll make sure no harm will come to you, you have suffered enough."
Rubbing my stomach I gave a last look out of the window to the lights outside, turning around I stretch to put the light off. Knowing for sure that what the future holds will be amazing, that there is no reason for any worry.
