Chapter 2

ROXANNE "Thought you said Jake gave you..." "We broke up today, Ethan," I didn't let him finish his sentence. Today has been mentally exhausting for me and it wasn't even noon yet. My brother has been stuck in a wheelchair ever since his hockey accident years ago. He was the one staying with Dad at the hospital. I emptied my account to pay for some of my father's outstanding bills, stayed a while at the hospital before going for my afternoon shift at Leila's Diner. I'd still have to plead with Mrs Carmen, the manager, to let me pick up extra afternoon and night shifts while I looked for a second job. "Hey, Rox." Blake, my classmate who worked the same shifts as me at the diner, joined me at the counter. "Blake, hi," I said, looking up from my phone where I was searching for jobs online. "I wasn't expecting to see you here after..." I knew what he was talking about. "It's fine, Blake." I returned to scrolling on my phone. "I'm sorry, Rox," his right arm came around my shoulders. "He's a loser." "Yeah, thanks," I answered absentmindedly. Jake was the least of my problems currently. I was so broke and I badly needed a new job before month end. "Uhmm, Blake, do you know any restaurant hiring waitstaff or mall that need more sale reps?" He paused for a moment. "No, not really." "Oww." My heart fell. I was currently not seeing any on my phone. "But, I think I remember my sister telling me about a maid job at the hockey facility last week." After my messy breakup with Jake this morning, I swore that it was going to be my last time setting foot there. "She said it's a monthly pay of twenty thousand. Whoever gets the job is paid an upfront of five thousand. It's only for three months, though." "Did you just say twenty thousand?" I was starting to have a rethink of my last decision. "Yes, Rox. Those hockey boys are loaded, not gonna lie. The job is only open to females, if not, I would have gone for it immediately." I was really desperate. "When is the deadline?" "It's today, if I'm not mistaken." He said, bringing out his phone from his pocket. "Today?" "Uhh, hold on. I need to confirm that first," he tapped on his phone screen for a while, then, started nodding. "Yeah, it's today. The interview ends by four pm." It was five minutes to one pm, that means I've got only three hours to try my luck at least. I quickly pulled off my apron. "Blake, I gotta go," "Go where? To the facility?" "Of course. I need the money, Blake." Giving him my apron, "please, cover up for me until I'm back." "Sure, anything for you, partner. Goodluck." On the norms, I usually walked back to campus after my shift. But right now, it felt as if I was running out of time. I paid for a cab with the little cash I had in my purse to drive me straight to the facility. Anxiety crept up my bones as I thought of the number of female applicants that might be there since today was the last day. I was surprised that my intuition was totally wrong. There was no single person at the waiting area outside of the interview room. A red haired girl stormed out of the room with a frown on her face. Oops, I guess she didn't get the job. I rushed up to her to know how it went. "Pfft," she hissed. "They might be offering the whole world as salary but they don't want a maid, they need a f*****g slave. For your own sanity, don't go in there." With that she left, still muttering under her breaths about arrogant athletes and their impossible demands. I would have listened to her if I wasn't in dire need of money. What she said might be true, judging from the fact that there was basically no one here today that was the deadline. Anyways, it was twenty thousand on the line, that sort of money couldn't be given out easily without hardwork. I didn't even realize that I was on my work uniform until I caught my reflection in the shiny glass door of the interview room. I cursed silently as I let my hair down to hide the Leila's Diner logo on my chest. I hope dressing wasn't much of a criteria. Taking in a deep breath, I knocked on the door. "Come in," a woman's voice sounded from inside. I pushed the door open and stepped inside. "Hello ma'am." "Have your seat." The mature looking woman said without looking at me. I opened my phone immediately to get a soft copy of my CV since I wasn't able to print it out because I thought I was running out of time. "Ma'am, here is my CV," "That's not needed," she interrupted me as she passed two papers to me on the table. One was tagged RULES, the other, RESPONSIBILITIES. I went through them one after the other and to be honest, I didn't find anything so hard to do. The responsibilities were the most basic things - washing, cleaning, cooking. As for the rules, there were not that much of a big deal to follow. Perhaps the girl I just spoke to, has never done any of these in her life for her to see the job as slavery. "So what do you think? Are you interested?" "Yes, ma'am." She paused, looking at me for the first time since I entered her office. "I must warn you," her eyes moved briefly to my name tag on my uniform. "Roxanne. This client is very, very difficult." "Nothing good comes easy, ma'am." I responded with a small laugh. "Hmm, if you say so," she said with a shrug. "Before I let you sign the contract, I will have to show you around first." She stood up from her seat and adjusted her blouse. Instead of using the main door, she pulled back the curtains to reveal a second exit. We stepped into a wide lobby which featured floor-to-ceiling glass windows and a bunch of hockey pictures on the walls. Amongst the pictures, there was this particular one that stood out. It was a large banner, grazing the floor. On the picture were the three top hockey players, if I must say. In the middle was the captain, Weston King with his blond hair and an angry scowl. On his left was Jax, Anaya's elder brother and on his right was Ryder, the team's enforcer. "This lobby leads to my client's private suite." She explained as we walked. We stopped in front of a heavy door marked KING. I swallowed hard. Weston King was her client and my supposed new boss. I didn't know much about Weston but just that angry scowl on his face I saw on that picture, made me feel uneasy. Weston's living space was sleek, not gonna lie. Everywhere smelled faintly of cedar and expensive cologne. Besides his massive, wall-sized TV and luxury sofas, there were trophies and team photos on the shelves. Blake didn't lie when he said hockey boys are loaded with money. I was showed my bedroom and surprisingly, it was nice and larger than I expected. "You're expected to move in this evening because your job starts tomorrow." We were out of Weston's space and walking down the lobby. "Okay ma'am." "The contract..." A deep male voice interrupted her from behind. We turned to meet Weston. This was my first time standing close to him. He was taller in person, broad shouldered with the same angry scowl I saw in that picture. He was on his practice gear, his blond hair looking damp. "Mrs Dexter," "Weston," "That's the maid?" He asked, pointing his index finger at me. "Yes," Mrs Dexter responded with a nod. "Good after..." "Try not to break anything." He rudely cut me off before walking out, and I felt like I had just been slapped. This was downright embarrassing. Who the hell does he think he is? I forced myself to stay quiet. I needed this job more than my pride right now. Mrs Dexter cleared her throat. "Do you still want to sign the contract?" I swallowed hard, thinking of my sick father, my disabled brother and the mountain of bills waiting for me at home. "S...sure, ma'am. I do."
