Chapter 3

ROXANNE "A maid to Weston King? My good Lord!" "Anaya, please calm down." "Honey, you just signed a death wish." "It's only for three months. How bad can he be?" Anaya shook her head. "Even though it's for a day. He is insufferable, extremely rude and arrogant. Yeah, he is my brother's closest friend but he is the biggest asshole I've ever met." My brief encounter with Weston earlier had already proven Anaya right. However, there was nothing I could do about it. I've signed the contract and should be in his quarters before six pm. I had wanted to give her a response when Sophie entered the room. "Hey girls. Anaya, why are you looking frustrated?" "Ask your best friend what she did today." Anaya said, crossing her arms. Sophie turned to me. "Did you guys have a fight?" "No," Anaya responded instead. "She just got a maid job. Guess who her boss is." "Jake?" Sophie answered with a raised eyebrow. "Eww, God forbid." I couldn't stop myself from saying, my face twisted in disgust. "Weston, Sophie." Anaya said flatly. "Weston King?" Sophie's eyes widened. "The one and only." "Wow, Roxanne. Why? What happened?" I wasn't planning on telling my friends about my recent predicament but I guess I couldn't hide it anymore. "Aww, love," Sophie murmured, pulling me into a hug after I was done. "You're in my prayers." Weston wasn't around when I got to his place, which was a big relief. I haven't forgotten how he glanced at me as if I were an object when he asked Mrs Dexter if I was the maid, or the rude comment he made right after. The morning after, my alarm buzzed at 4:30am waking me up immediately. From the rules, I should be in the kitchen by five. I used twenty minutes to freshen up and get myself ready. At exactly five, I was in the kitchen. Weston was there already, sitting on one of the stools, busy on his tablet. "Good morning," I greeted. "Make me coffee," he said without looking up. "Pitch black...two minutes." I moved quickly to the coffee machine. It was the same type at Leila's Diner, so I knew my way around it. In about a minute plus, I placed the coffee mug right in front of him. "My gear. It's in the living room," he started again with his orders, his eyes still on the screen. "Lay everything out perfectly, my jersey should be on top." He raised the mug to his lips and took a huge gulp. "And while you're at it. I need no noise." I only nodded and went to the living room. It wasn't even up to five minutes I was arranging his gear as he said, he joined me in the living room holding a pile of jerseys. He dumped them right on his gear that I was almost done arranging. "I need them ironed, then join them with the rest of my gear." I told myself I would be of my best behaviour at least on my first day, but nah, I wouldn't let this slide. "Weston, you do realize I'm a human being and not a robot." "And?" "You have to chill with your orders." He looked up at me slowly. "Ohh, I see you've got some fire in you," he let out a dry chuckle, sounding amused. "But don't also forget I pay your salary," his voice returned back to its cold tone. "Anyways you're on probation. Another wrong move and you get fired on the spot. Understood?" "Un...derstood." I forced myself to say. "Be done with everything before eight thirty. I have practice by nine." He paused the hockey game he was reviewing on his tablet to use his phone. "I sent you the rest of my schedule for today. Don't make me wait for you." I was done before eight thirty though, because I had Statistics class by the same time. From his schedule, his practice game ends by one pm which means I should be back at his quarters before then. Luckily for me, my classes ended by noon. Since there was no other thing to do, I went back to the hockey facility. Walking down the lobby, I caught sight of Weston on the rink with other players. He was fast. He was brutal. This wasn't even a real game and he turned it into war. I flinched hard when he slammed a teammate into the boards when he tried to steal the puck. He didn't even bother to glance back to know if his teammate was okay. He began barking orders at everyone, still skating with the puck in his possession. While on it, he hit another teammate and the poor boy slid off the rink. Was hockey supposed to be this violent? The coach was even nodding like everything was normal. I just couldn't watch anymore and decided I go get myself ready before my boss returned. Everywhere looked scattered when I got in. But, it wasn't like this in the morning before I left. It seemed like Weston intentionally turned his house upside down just to punish me. I changed my school clothes into something more casual, then began cleaning. I started with the living room first, then moved to the kitchen before going to his bedroom. His bedroom was neatly arranged clearly telling me he did the scattering on purpose. I had wanted to leave his bedroom when something caught my eye on his night stand. Tucked behind toilet paper rolls were medical wraps, elastic bandages stained with sweat and ointment. Next to them were two prescription bottles. I picked one up to read the labels. This wasn't just ordinary painkillers. Whatever made Weston take these pills was very serious. I cleared the table, taking one of the bottles with me. It was almost one pm. He should be preparing to be back by now. Going back to the kitchen, I kept the bottle on the counter where he would see it easily. Hearing the sound of the outside door told me he was back, I hesitated because I know he would've coming to the kitchen next. But he didn't. He went to his bedroom. No matter how long it was going to take, I would wait for him. The sound of his bedroom door startled me and his footsteps were fast approaching the kitchen. I didn't bother greeting him because he wasn't going to respond. Then I felt his presence behind me. I turned immediately to find myself caged against the counter. He placed one hand beside me, the other on the island. He was so tall that I had to tilt my head back to meet his eyes. He smelled of soap and rich cologne. "Curious, little maid, aren't you?" His voice was low. "Keep your eyes on the floor, not on me." "I was cleaning, Weston, when I saw the wraps and the pills. You're really hurting." "That's none of your damn business," his jaw flexed. "Maybe not. But slamming people into boards like you want to break them isn't normal either. You're going to destroy yourself." His eyes got so dark I was scared he was going to yell at me. Instead, he leaned closer, our faces almost touching. "You think you know me in just few hours of being here. You don't know s**t!" "I'm fully aware of that. But I'm not going to pretend as if I see nothing." He drew himself back, giving me space. "Stay out of my business, Carter." He grabbed the pill bottle from the counter. "This should be the last time you go into my bedroom." Right in front of me, he opened the bottle, popped four pills into his mouth and swallowed them dry. "Make me lunch. I have a meeting by three." He turned to leave the kitchen, but paused at the doorway. "You're not my nurse. You're my maid. Act like it." My breath shook when he left. My hands trembled as I picked up the cleaning cloth again. One day down. And way too many more to go.
