ROXANNE
It had been three days with Weston barely around, and I was enjoying every second of it. I secretly hoped he'd spend more time wherever he was. However, my peace was short-lived when I got a message from him to get snacks and drinks ready because he would be back in ten minutes with his friends.
I did not start prepping the snacks until I heard the sound of the outside door opening. I rushed to the kitchen to do as I was told. I could hear loud voices and laughter as Weston's teammates poured in, along with a group of women dressed in tight tops and short skirts. Puck bunnies, I thought.
I filled up the tray I was holding with lots of snacks, then brought out another for the drinks. I carried the snacks out to the living room first.
"Weston, this new space of yours is insane!" One of the guys called out, slapping Weston on the back. I was expecting to see Jax or Ryder among his teammates, but I didn't. They were all new faces including the females except... I narrowed my eyes at the girl sitting on Weston's laps.
Her face looked very familiar
"Wait, are you not Jake's girlfriend?" One of the girls asked, giggling.
"Of course, she is. Poor Roxy." The girl on Weston's laps answered.
It was then I remembered exactly who she was. She was the one who bumped into Sophie and I three days ago on the dorm stairs. After pretending to feel sorry for me and saying that hockey boys are red flags, yet she's fawned over the biggest red flag himself.
I ignored them as I went back to get the drinks.
"Imagine breaking up with one hockey player and becoming a maid for another right after. That's f*****g hilarious." A different girl said when I came back with the drinks and they all laughed.
"Aww, Vera, that's diabolical," the girl on Weston's laps drawled. "I bet Weston here makes her curtsy in that maid uniform of hers."
I straightened up, taking the empty snack tray as I met her gaze. "At least, I get paid to be here. What's your own excuse for sitting on his lap like a discounted groupie?"
The guys burst out laughing, "Ouch, the maid got you there, Sasha."
The smile on Weston's face vanished. He wasn't having any of it at all. His warning eyes were already telling me to go back to my room. I didn't listen to him though. I stayed in the kitchen waiting for the party to end while reading through the book club group chat.
An hour or so later, I heard them moving to the balcony. It seemed like party time was over. Phew, finally, I can't wait to get my peace and quiet. I stood up from the kitchen stool to go to the living room to clean up when I bumped in Weston. Without giving me a chance of protest, he grabbed my wrist and dragged me down the hall way into an empty room. He shut the door hard.
"What the hell was that?"
"What are you talking about?"
"Making sharp remarks to earn few laughs." He reminded me.
"She mocked me first," I pulled my arm free. "I'm not going to stand there and let someone insult me."
"You're here to work, not run your mouth in front of my team. You embarrassed me."
"Embarrassed you?" My voice rose in disbelief. "By defending myself? Nah, you can't be serious. Maybe don't invite people who act like that into your home."
What he did next nearly threw me off balance. He traced my lower lip with his thumb, sending thrill down my spine before shocking the hell out of me when he gripped my neck firmly.
"W...Weston," I began struggling against him, both of my hands on his, trying to free myself but it made him tighten his fingers.
"You have no f*****g right to tell me who I bring into my house," his words came out as a whisper but I could definitely feel the ice on them. This is my last warning to you, Carter. Keep that sharp tongue of yours in check or you're gone." He released his grip and I fell to the ground coughing.
"Then, fire me!" I couldn't hold back my anger. "Go ahead, Weston."
He chuckled, running a hand through his hair. "I'll do that in my own terms, not yours. Get back to work."
He yanked the door open and left without looking at me.
The rest of the evening dragged on after Weston left with friends. I cleaned in silence forcing myself to forget the last moment I had with Weston in that room. The asshole would have choked me to death. What the f**k was wrong with him? If not I needed this money so badly, I would have resigned after giving him the insult of his life. He has been fishing out threats of firing me, yet he wasn't doing that...probably because he knows that he won't find anyone to take this damn job.
I went back to my room after cleaning to rest my aching body. He better not need anything until tomorrow morning, please.
My eyes were starting to get heavy as I pulled up the covers around my body when I heard a loud crash. Sleep vanished from my eyes immediately.
Where did that come from? I asked myself as I got up from the bed.
I left my bedroom and a much louder one happened. I was certain it was in this house and it came from Weston's room.
"Was he fighting with someone or what?"
I got in front of his bedroom door contemplating whether I should interfere or let him sort himself out until I heard a painful groan coming from inside. Without hesitating, I pushed the door open and I was shocked at what I saw.
Weston was on the floor, his back against the wall, legs sprawled out. He was only on a pair of shorts. One hand clutched his left shoulder so tightly that his knuckles were white. His face was twisted in agony, beads of sweats on his forehead. The prescription bottle was inches away from him, pills scattered all over.
"Weston, are you okay?" I stepped forward, genuinely concerned.
"Get the hell out," he snarled.
"Wes.." his shoulder was visibly swollen from where I stood.
"I said get out!" He snapped, trying to get up but couldn't. "I don't need your help. Leave."
It took everything in me not to listen to him and go help him, but I chose not to. He would likely throw me out.
"Fine," I muttered. "If you keep pretending nothing is wrong, you're going to tear yourself apart." I turned and left, pulling his bedroom door shut.
The following morning, I woke up to a relentless knocking coming from the outside door. I wondered who that could be, as I slipped into my robe. It was barely seven am. Why would anyone want to see Weston by this time?
I opened the door and Mrs Dexter and two security officers stormed in.
The first thing that came to my mind was 'What did Weston do?'
"Roxanne, are you sleeping with my client?" Mrs Dexter demanded.
That question threw me off balance.
"What? That's absurd!"
"Good. Then, explain this," Mrs Dexter shoved her phone in my face. It was a clear video of me leaving Weston's bedroom last night. Then, followed by Weston himself coming out seconds later with only a towel around his waist. The headline above the video, already trending online, read: "The Hockey King's Live-In Maid... Or Secret Live-In Lover?"
Everything in me went cold.
You've got to be f*****g kidding me.
