CHAPTER ONE

The Sterling Group ballroom glittered beneath crystal chandeliers, every table decorated with white roses—Sophia’s favorite flower. She smiled as she adjusted the silver cufflinks she had bought for Ethan with three months of savings. Tonight marked their seventh wedding anniversary. She believed it would be the beginning of a new chapter for their marriage. Instead, it became the end. The murmurs began before Ethan even stepped onto the stage. He wasn’t alone. On his arm stood Vanessa Hart, her hand resting possessively on Ethan’s shoulder. A flash of confusion crossed Sophia’s face. Then Ethan took the microphone. “Thank you all for coming tonight.” His voice was steady. “I know everyone thought this was an anniversary celebration.” He paused. “It isn’t.” The room fell silent. “I’m announcing my divorce from Sophia Walker.” The words crashed into her like a tidal wave. Sophia stared at him, unable to believe what she had heard. “Ethan… what are you talking about?” Without looking at her, he removed a brown envelope from the podium. “Sign the papers.” The lawyer stepped forward. “So this is why you invited everyone?” Sophia whispered. “To humiliate me?” Ethan finally met her eyes. “I married you because my grandfather insisted. That obligation ended the day he died.” Vanessa smiled triumphantly. “I’m pregnant.” Gasps echoed across the ballroom. Sophia’s fingers trembled. Pregnant? She looked from Vanessa to Ethan, searching desperately for any sign that this was a cruel joke. There was none. “I’ve already arranged our wedding,” Ethan said coldly. “It will be next week.” The envelope slipped from Sophia’s hands. Seven years. Seven years of loyalty. Seven years of sacrifice. Reduced to a single signature. The lawyer placed a pen in front of her. “Mrs. Sterling…” “Please sign.” Sophia slowly picked up the pen. She looked at Ethan one last time. “If I sign this…” “…you’ll never have the right to call me your wife again.” Ethan answered without hesitation. “I never wanted that right.” Sophia closed her eyes. Then she signed. As the ink dried, the ballroom doors burst open. Outside… The sound of dozens of luxury engines echoed through the night. The celebration stopped. Every guest turned toward the entrance. A line of identical black Rolls-Royces had just arrived. And the man stepping out of the lead car was someone no one in the city had expected to see.
