BLOOD SISTER'S LIES
‘A crown may be claimed by blood, but trust is earned beneath the eyes of those who choose to follow."
Thornhaven quickly became more than a sanctuary. It became a rhythm. A way of life. As each sunrise painted the mountain peaks in shades of gold, the hidden valley awakened with quiet purpose. Hunters disappeared into the forests before dawn. Healers gathered herbs along the streams. Children laughed as they raced between stone cottages, their carefree voices carrying through the crisp mountain air. For the first time since Melissa's betrayal... Teagan found herself breathing without fear. But because she was no longer facing it alone. Not because the danger had vanished.
Every morning began the same way. Long before the rest of the valley stirred, Kael waited in the training circle. He was never late. He rarely smiled. And he never made training easy. Again. Again. Again. Every mistake earned another lesson. Every hesitation another round. He taught her how to fight as both woman and wolf. How to shift her weight before an opponent struck. How to use speed instead of strength. How to anticipate movement rather than react to it. "You rely too much on instinct," Kael said after effortlessly disarming her for what felt like the hundredth time. Teagan groaned as she picked herself up from the dirt. "I thought instinct was supposed to be a wolf's greatest strength." "It is." He tossed her the wooden practice blade. "But panic isn't instinct." She caught it. "It feels very similar." "For beginners." It disappeared before she could decide if she'd imagined it. A faint smile threatened the corner of his mouth.
The afternoons belonged to the elders. While the warriors trained outside, Teagan sat beneath the Heart Tree listening to stories older than kingdoms. She learned the names of forgotten Silver Lunas. The great packs that had once guarded entire forests. The ancient ceremonies performed beneath every full moon. Most importantly... She learned about failure. Not every Silver Luna had been victorious. Some had fallen. Some had made terrible mistakes. Some had sacrificed everything so others could live. The stories comforted her more than tales of triumph ever could. Were never fearless. Heroes, she realised...
As evening settled across Thornhaven, Teagan climbed alone to the highest cliff overlooking the valley. There she practised shadowing. The first night, her glow blazed across the mountainside like a beacon. The second, it flickered. By the fifth... It had softened into a gentle shimmer. By the seventh... She could almost disappear into the moonlit stone. Almost. She still had much to learn. But for the first time... Progress felt possible.
It was during the seventh night that everything changed. Teagan stood near the cliff's edge with her eyes closed, breathing exactly as Thistle had taught her. Slow. Steady. Balanced. The silver glow beneath her skin faded until it was barely visible. Then... The wind shifted. Her eyes snapped open. A familiar scent drifted through the mountain air. Vanilla. Lavender. Her entire body froze. No. It couldn't be. That scent belonged to only one person. Melissa. Her heartbeat thundered. The glow beneath her skin erupted without warning, flooding the cliff with brilliant silver light. She spun. Was her blood sister Standing several paces away, framed by the moonlight with both hands raised in surrender...
Melissa stood motionless. Her hands remained raised in surrender, trembling in the moonlight. The grey robes of the Order hung awkwardly from her slight frame, as though they belonged to someone else. She looked nothing like the confident young woman Teagan remembered. She looked exhausted. Haunted. Broken. For several long moments... Neither sister spoke. The only sound was the wind sweeping across the cliff. Finally, Melissa swallowed. "Don't." Her voice cracked. "Please..." Her eyes filled with tears. "...don't run." Teagan's laugh escaped before she could stop it. It wasn't laughter. It was disbelief. "Run?" Her silver glow surged brighter. "You think I'm the one who runs?" She took a slow step forward. "I spent my entire life trusting you." Another step. "I told you the one secret that could get me killed." Another. "And you handed it to the very people who wanted me dead." Melissa flinched as though every word had struck her. "I know." "No." "You don't." Teagan's voice sharpened.
The memories came flooding back. Rainy afternoons in the foster home. Sharing one blanket during winter because neither of them had enough. Sneaking into the kitchen for stolen biscuits after lights-out. Melissa holding her hand after her first terrifying transformation. "I'll always protect you." The promise echoed inside Teagan's mind. A promise made by a frightened teenager. A promise broken by a frightened woman. Tears stung her eyes. "You were my family." Melissa lowered her head. "I still am." "No." Teagan shook her head. "My family doesn't sell me to monsters." Silence. Melissa closed her eyes. "You deserve worse." "I deserve that."
The words hung between them. Sharp. Painful. True. Melissa didn't argue. Instead, she slowly lowered herself onto her knees. The movement startled Teagan. "I'm not here asking for forgiveness." Melissa's voice barely rose above the whispering wind. "I don't expect it." She looked up through tear-filled eyes. "I don't even expect you to believe me." "Then why are you here?" Teagan demanded. Melissa took a shaky breath. "Because I couldn't live with what I'd done." Another breath. "I thought I was protecting you." She laughed bitterly at herself. "I was so stupid." "God..." "They came to me three months ago." Teagan remained silent. "They already knew about you." Melissa looked down at her trembling hands. "They had photographs." "Witness statements." "They knew where you worked." "They even knew where we grew up." Teagan felt her stomach knot. "They didn't need me to find you." Melissa nodded slowly. "No." "They needed someone you trusted." The realization struck harder than the betrayal itself. The Order hadn't been searching blindly. They had planned everything. Every meeting. Every conversation. Every opportunity. Melissa had simply become another piece on their board. "They told me..." Melissa whispered, "...that if I cooperated, they'd keep you alive." She laughed again, the sound hollow and broken. "They said they only wanted to study you." "They said they wanted to understand the Silver Luna." "I believed them." She looked directly at Teagan.
Teagan stared at her sister. She wanted to hate her. She wanted the anger to come easily. Instead... She saw only regret. It didn't erase the betrayal. It didn't lessen the pain. But it made something painfully clear. Melissa hadn't acted out of cruelty. She had acted out of fear. Had nearly destroyed them both. And fear...
The wind swept across the cliff, carrying with it the scent of pine and approaching snow. For a long moment, neither sister spoke. The silence was no longer filled with anger. It was filled with the weight of everything that had been lost. Finally, Teagan broke it. "Why now?" Melissa blinked. "What?" "You've had weeks." Teagan folded her arms across her chest. "You could have disappeared." "You could have stayed with the Order." "So why risk coming here?" Melissa's expression tightened. "Because I overheard something." The fear returned to her eyes. "The Archon wasn't supposed to know I was nearby." "I was delivering records." "He thought I'd already left." "I heard him speaking with the High Circle." She swallowed hard.
Melissa slowly rose to her feet. "They weren't talking about capturing you anymore." Teagan frowned. "They've changed their plans." "How?" "They've stopped hunting." The words sounded impossible. "They know they'll never catch you while the wolves protect you." Melissa looked toward the moon hanging above the valley. "So now..." "They're going to make you come to them." A cold knot tightened in Teagan's stomach "How?" Melissa hesitated. Her voice became almost a whisper. "They've recovered an ancient ritual." The words caught in her throat. "They call it..." "...the Hollow Moon." Her eyes lifted to the moon.
The name struck Teagan like a physical blow. Fragments of Thistle's lessons rushed back. Ancient scrolls. Half-forgotten warnings. Stories dismissed as impossible. "The Hollow Moon..." she breathed. Melissa nodded. "It's real." "I thought it was only a legend." "So did everyone else." Melissa wrapped her arms around herself against the cold. "But they've found the original writings." "The ritual survived." Teagan's pulse quickened. "What does it do?" Melissa's face drained of colour. "It steals something worse." "It doesn't steal your life."
"The Silver Luna draws strength from the moon." Melissa looked skyward. "The Hollow Moon severs that bond." Her voice trembled. "If the ritual succeeds..." "Your light will belong to them." Teagan felt as though the air had vanished from her lungs. "My light..." Melissa nodded. "They believe they can imprison it." "They'll use it to empower every sorcerer within the Order." "They believe they'll become unstoppable." The words echoed in the stillness. Powered by the blessing meant only for one bloodline. An army...
"They're missing one thing." Melissa looked directly at Teagan. "You." Teagan already knew the answer. "They need me alive." "Yes." "They need the Silver Luna beneath the full moon." Melissa's breathing became uneven. "The ritual can only happen once every five centuries." "The next full moon..." She paused. "...is the last opportunity." Teagan's heart pounded. "When?" Melissa didn't answer immediately. She simply held Teagan's gaze. Finally... "In nine days." The words settled over the mountains like a death sentence. Nine days. Nine days to prepare. Nine days to unite a scattered people. Nine days to stop a ritual believed lost to history. Far below, Thornhaven slept peacefully beneath the moon. That time had just begun to run out. None of them knew...
Teagan closed her eyes. Nine days. A week ago, she had been running for her life through Blackwood Forest. Now... The fate of every surviving wolf rested upon a countdown she had never asked for. She opened her eyes once more. There was only one question left. She looked at Melissa. "How do we stop it?" Melissa's expression faltered. For the first time since arriving... She had no answer. And that frightened Teagan more than anything Melissa had said all night Only fear.
Melissa lowered her gaze. "I don't know." The admission was barely audible. "I only heard pieces of the ritual." "The Archon keeps the full texts locked inside the Sanctum." She drew a shaky breath. "I wasn't important enough to hear everything." Teagan searched her sister's face. For the first time since Melissa had arrived... There was no deception. Only helplessness. "You came all this way..." Teagan said quietly. "...without knowing how to stop them?" Melissa nodded. "I came because someone had to warn you." "If I'd waited any longer..." "...it would have been too late." Her voice caught. A twig snapped behind them. Both sisters spun. Within moments, wolves emerged silently from the darkness. Kael. Three warriors. Then Thistle. None of them looked surprised. Kael's eyes never left Melissa. "You crossed our borders." His voice was calm. "You expected we wouldn't notice?" Melissa slowly lowered her hands again. "I wasn't trying to hide." "No." Kael agreed. "You weren't." The warriors formed a loose circle around the sisters. Not threatening. Prepared. Teagan looked between them. "You've been watching us?" "The entire time." "No one enters Thornhaven unseen." Kael answered.
Thistle stepped forward. Her amber eyes rested on Melissa. "So..." "You are the sister." Melissa nodded once. "I am." Silence settled once again. The old woman walked slowly around her, studying the grey robes of the Order. The scar on her cheek. The exhaustion in her eyes. Finally... Thistle stopped.
