Chapter 4: Shadows of the Past

The moon hung low in the night sky as Noelle made her way back to Eldoria. The healer’s words replayed in her mind, each one weighing heavier than the last. Alexander’s curse wasn’t just a rumor; it was a reality that had shaped his entire life. Noelle felt a pang of sympathy for him. He wasn’t a heartless prince by choice—he was a man haunted by his own power. But what could she do about it? She was just a simple healer. Noelle shook her head, as if to clear the doubts that had begun to creep in. She had to believe that her kindness and determination could make a difference. As she approached the village, the familiar sight of the small, bustling community eased her troubled thoughts. Eldoria was alive even at night, its streets lit by lanterns and the chatter of villagers unwinding after a day’s work. She passed the blacksmith’s shop, where the rhythmic clang of metal still echoed, and the bakery, its warm scent drifting into the cool night air. Noelle’s small home came into view—a modest cottage nestled at the edge of the village, surrounded by a garden she had tended with care over the years. The sight of it brought her a sense of peace, even as the storm of thoughts raged in her mind. Inside, Kaisen was waiting. He leaned casually against the wall, his arms crossed, his sharp eyes watching her as she entered. “You’re late,” he said, his tone light but tinged with concern. “Did you get lost, or were you off saving the world again?” Noelle smiled faintly, hanging her shawl on a nearby hook. “Neither. I… I learned something today. Something about the prince.” Kaisen straightened, his expression turning serious. “The Heartless Prince? You were asking about him?” “Yes,” she replied, meeting his gaze. “And I found out that the rumors aren’t just stories. He’s cursed, Kaisen. His powers—he can’t control them. That’s why he’s so feared.” Kaisen frowned, his brows knitting together. “And why do you care? He’s dangerous, Noelle. If the rumors are true, he’s not someone you should get involved with.” Noelle sighed, sitting down at the table. “Because I think there’s more to him than what people see. He’s trapped in his own pain, his own fear. If someone doesn’t try to reach him, he might lose himself completely.” Kaisen shook his head, his voice firm. “You can’t save everyone, Noelle. Sometimes, people are beyond saving. And you? You have your own life to think about. You’re the healer of Eldoria. The villagers depend on you. Do you really want to risk everything for a man who’s probably better left alone?” Noelle looked at him, her eyes unwavering. “I can’t turn my back on someone who’s suffering, Kaisen. You know that.” Kaisen sighed, running a hand through his hair. “I know. And that’s what worries me. You care too much, Noelle. But if this is what you’ve decided, I won’t try to stop you. Just… be careful. The closer you get to Alexander, the more danger you’ll be in.” --- Meanwhile, in the royal palace, Alexander stood alone in the training yard, the faint glow of moonlight casting shadows across his features. His hands were clenched into fists, his knuckles white with tension. The memory of his last fight replayed in his mind—a chaotic blur of blood, pain, and rage. He could still hear the screams, still feel the weight of the lives he had taken. The monster within him had taken over again, leaving destruction in its wake. Alexander hated that part of himself, the part he couldn’t control. But he hated his weakness even more. “You’re still out here.” Alexander turned at the sound of Neil’s voice. His older brother stood at the edge of the yard, his expression a mix of concern and exasperation. “I couldn’t sleep,” Alexander replied curtly, turning back to the training dummy. He struck it with a force that sent splinters flying, but it did little to ease the turmoil inside him. Neil approached, his footsteps deliberate. “You can’t keep doing this to yourself, Alex. Punishing yourself for something you can’t change.” “I don’t need your pity,” Alexander snapped, his voice sharp. Neil sighed, crossing his arms. “It’s not pity. It’s the truth. You think you’re the only one who’s ever felt powerless? We’ve all faced our demons, Alex. But you don’t have to face yours alone.” Alexander shook his head, his jaw tightening. “You don’t understand. No one does. The things I’ve done… the things I’ve become… they can’t be undone.” Neil placed a hand on his brother’s shoulder, his grip firm. “You’re wrong. Maybe you can’t change the past, but you can choose what kind of man you want to be. And you don’t have to do it alone.” For a moment, Alexander said nothing, his gaze fixed on the ground. Then he nodded, a small, almost imperceptible movement. “Get some rest,” Neil said gently. “Tomorrow is another day.” As Neil left, Alexander stood alone once more, the weight of his thoughts pressing heavily on him. But for the first time in a long time, a small flicker of hope stirred within him. --- Back in Eldoria, Noelle lay awake, staring at the ceiling of her bedroom. The healer’s words echoed in her mind, mingling with her own determination. She didn’t know what the future held, but she knew one thing: she wouldn’t give up on Alexander. Their fates were intertwined, and she was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead. --- End of Chapter 4
