The next morning in Eldoria dawned bright and clear, the golden light spilling over the cobblestone streets and the rolling hills beyond. Noelle was busy in her garden, harvesting herbs for the village healer. The familiar rhythm of her work was comforting, grounding her in the present even as her thoughts wandered to the mysterious prince.
A soft breeze rustled the leaves around her as she carefully picked lavender and chamomile. Her hands worked methodically, but her mind was elsewhere. How would she approach someone like Alexander? He was royalty, after all, and their worlds couldn’t be more different.
“Noelle!” Kaisen’s voice called from the cottage. He sounded urgent, almost alarmed.
She dropped her basket and hurried inside to find him pacing the small living area, his brow furrowed with concern.
“What is it?” she asked, her heart racing. “What’s wrong?”
“Soldiers,” Kaisen replied, his voice low. “They’re in the village. They’re looking for someone.”
Noelle’s stomach dropped. “Someone? Who?”
“I don’t know,” Kaisen admitted, his gaze sharp. “But they’re asking too many questions. You need to stay out of sight.”
Before Noelle could respond, there was a knock at the door. Her heart leaped into her throat as Kaisen motioned for her to stay behind him. He opened the door cautiously, revealing a tall man clad in royal armor. His piercing eyes scanned the room, landing briefly on Noelle before returning to Kaisen.
“We’re searching for a young woman,” the soldier said, his tone clipped. “Dark hair, green eyes. She’s of interest to the crown.”
Noelle stiffened, her pulse quickening. That description fit her perfectly.
“And why would the crown be interested in someone like that?” Kaisen asked smoothly, stepping further into the doorway to block the soldier’s view of Noelle.
“That’s none of your concern,” the soldier replied. “If you’ve seen anyone matching that description, you’re required to report it.”
Kaisen’s expression didn’t waver. “No one like that here. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we have work to do.”
The soldier’s gaze lingered on Kaisen for a moment before he turned and left. Noelle let out a shaky breath as the door closed behind him.
“What’s happening, Kaisen?” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Why would the crown be looking for me?”
“I don’t know,” Kaisen replied, his jaw tight. “But we can’t take any chances. You need to leave the village, at least for now.”

Far from Eldoria, Alexander stood on the balcony of his chambers in the royal palace of Avalon. The sprawling gardens below were meticulously maintained, but his gaze was fixed on the horizon. His mind was clouded with thoughts of the rumors he’d heard—rumors of a healer in Eldoria with an uncanny ability to help even the most hopeless cases.
“Alexander,” Liam’s voice interrupted his thoughts. His younger brother leaned casually against the doorway, his expression curious. “Are you really planning to go to Eldoria?”
“Yes,” Alexander replied without hesitation. “I need answers, and I think I’ll find them there.”
“Answers about what?” Liam asked, stepping closer. “You’ve been unusually secretive lately, even for you.”
Alexander hesitated, his hands gripping the balcony railing. “About the curse. About myself. There’s someone in Eldoria who might know something—someone who might be able to help.”
Liam’s expression softened, a rare moment of understanding passing between the two brothers. “If you’re going, you shouldn’t go alone. Eldoria isn’t exactly friendly territory for someone like you.”
“I don’t need protection,” Alexander said curtly.
“It’s not about protection,” Liam countered. “It’s about strategy. If you want to get close to this person, you need someone who knows how to navigate the village. Someone who can help you blend in.”
Alexander considered this for a moment before nodding. “Fine. But I’ll choose who accompanies me.”

By midday, Noelle had packed a small bag with essentials and said tearful goodbyes to a few close friends in the village. Kaisen insisted on escorting her partway, despite her protests.
“You’re not doing this alone,” he said firmly as they walked along a narrow path that wound through the forest. “If the soldiers find you—”
“They won’t,” Noelle interrupted. “I’ll be careful. But you can’t leave the village undefended, Kaisen. The people need you.”
“And I need to make sure you’re safe,” he retorted.
Their conversation was cut short when they heard the sound of hoofbeats approaching. They both froze, their eyes meeting in alarm.
“Hide,” Kaisen whispered, pushing Noelle toward a thicket of bushes. She crouched low, her heart pounding, as he stepped out onto the path to face the riders.
A group of soldiers emerged from the trees, their leader at the front—a tall, imposing man with dark hair and a cold expression. Noelle recognized him immediately. It was Alexander, the Heartless Prince.
“What are you doing here?” Kaisen demanded, his voice steady despite the tension in the air.
Alexander’s sharp gaze swept over Kaisen before landing on the bushes where Noelle was hiding. She held her breath, willing herself to remain unseen.
“We’re searching for someone,” Alexander said, his voice low and commanding. “A healer. She’s said to live in this area.”
Kaisen’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t respond. Alexander’s gaze lingered for a moment longer before he dismounted his horse. His movements were deliberate, almost predatory, as he took a step closer to the bushes.
“I know you’re there,” he said softly, his voice carrying an edge of danger. “Come out.”
Noelle’s heart raced as she realized she had no choice. Slowly, she stood, stepping out from her hiding place to face him. Their eyes met, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still.
Alexander’s expression was unreadable as he took her in. “You’re the healer,” he said, more a statement than a question.
Noelle swallowed hard but stood her ground. “And you’re the Heartless Prince.”
A flicker of something—surprise, amusement, or perhaps anger—passed through Alexander’s eyes before he spoke again. “You’re coming with me.”
