The following days were filled with a strange sense of tension that neither Noelle nor Alexander could shake off. The weight of their conversation in the garden lingered like a storm waiting to break, and both of them found themselves lost in thoughts of what lay ahead. Alexander, who had never allowed anyone to get so close, was now struggling with the delicate balance between trusting Noelle and keeping his distance for her own safety.
Noelle, on the other hand, was determined to show Alexander that he wasn’t beyond saving, but the road ahead felt uncertain. There were so many pieces of his past that she didn’t fully understand, so many layers of pain and darkness that he had yet to reveal. And though she could see the flicker of hope in his eyes, she also saw the fear—the fear that his power would one day consume him and everyone around him.
But the time for understanding was running out.
The kingdom of Avalon was on the verge of a new crisis, and Noelle had to leave the royal palace to tend to the needs of her people. News had reached her that the village she had grown up in, Eldoria, was facing an impending threat—bandits and marauders had been attacking nearby villages, and rumors of a larger force gathering in the shadows were spreading like wildfire.
Noelle knew that her responsibilities lay with her people. She couldn’t afford to stay in Avalon while her homeland was in danger. But leaving Alexander was not an easy decision. The thought of leaving him when he was so vulnerable felt like a betrayal, but she had to follow her heart. Her duty was to her people, and she couldn’t allow herself to be distracted from that.
That evening, after the last of her preparations were made, Noelle stood before Alexander in the royal study, her eyes searching his face for some sign of what he was feeling.
“Alexander,” she began softly, her voice quiet with the weight of the decision she had made. “I need to go back to Eldoria.”
His expression was unreadable, but she could see the tightness in his jaw, the way his shoulders tensed. He had been so quiet, so distant lately, as though he was preparing himself for her to leave.
“Why now?” he asked, his voice thick with something she couldn’t quite place. Was it regret? Anger? Perhaps even fear?
“Noelle,” he continued, stepping toward her, his eyes locked on hers. “You’re leaving when I still don’t have control over this... curse. You’re leaving when we haven’t even begun to understand what’s happening with me. How can you just walk away from that?”
Noelle’s heart twisted at the uncertainty in his voice, the desperation that she had never seen in him before. It was a side of Alexander that was raw and unfiltered, one she hadn’t known existed beneath his stoic exterior.
“I’m not abandoning you, Alexander,” she replied softly, stepping closer to him. “You’re not alone in this. I promised I’d stay, and I will. But my people need me, too. Eldoria needs me.” She reached out and touched his arm gently, the warmth of her touch grounding him in that moment. “I can’t turn my back on them, just like I can’t turn my back on you.”
Alexander’s gaze darkened, a storm brewing in his eyes as he looked down at her hand resting on his arm.
“You’re making a mistake,” he said, his voice low, almost a growl. “You think you can just leave and everything will be fine, but this curse—it doesn’t let go. It never will. And when it breaks, when it completely takes control...”
He didn’t finish the sentence, but the implication hung in the air like a warning. Noelle could feel the weight of his words, but she refused to be swayed by his fear.
“I won’t let it break you,” she said firmly. “And you won’t break me either. We will fight this, Alexander. But for now, I have to do my duty.”
For a long moment, Alexander said nothing. His expression was a mask of frustration, confusion, and something deeper—something almost like longing. He wanted to say something, wanted to beg her to stay, but his pride, his fear, held him back. He couldn’t let himself become vulnerable, not now.
Finally, with a heavy sigh, he stepped back. “Then go, Noelle. But remember—every time you leave, you make it harder for me to stay away.”
The words cut through her like a dagger. Noelle wanted to stay, to comfort him, to promise him that everything would be fine. But deep down, she knew she couldn’t make that promise—not yet.
“I will come back,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “I promise.”
Alexander didn’t respond, his back turned to her as he stared out the window. Noelle hesitated, unsure if she should say more, but in the end, she knew it would do no good. They both had their battles to fight, and this one would not be won in a moment.
Without another word, she turned and left the study, her heart heavy as the door clicked softly behind her.

As Noelle rode through the kingdom on horseback, her thoughts remained with Alexander. She could feel the pull of his presence, even from miles away. She could only hope that their bond was strong enough to withstand the distance. But more than that, she hoped that in the time they spent apart, Alexander would begin to believe in himself again—to believe that he could control the power that haunted him.
The road to Eldoria was long, and the dangers that lay ahead were greater than she could imagine. But Noelle was determined to do what was right. Her people needed her. And when the time was right, she would return to Avalon, to Alexander, and they would face the darkness together.
